📸 An Exciting Day for Luscinia Ecology! Safety is paramount in our fieldwork, and ongoing #training is crucial for ensuring we can handle any situation that arises in the often challenging and changeable environment in which we work. As part of our ongoing training, we sent Lorna Roberts, Jennifer Senft and Nea Steele to Bristol to learn the essentials of emergency outdoor first aid. Environmental #fieldwork often involves unique challenges: 🌳 Surveying disused buildings 🌧️ Unpredictable weather conditions 🏔️ Working at height 🌑 Operating in low light or total darkness 🌿 Navigating natural hazards like uneven ground and toxic plants 🐾 Encountering animal hazards During this engaging course, we not only honed essential #firstaid skills but also enjoyed a getting to know each other a little better through roll playing different emergency scenarios. We even swapped and shared our botanical knowledge over a picnic lunch in the sunshine🧺. Who knew you could do so much with the humble Conker?!🌳 While we hope to never have to use a #defibrillator or pack an open wound, being prepared and equipped for every eventuality allows us to continue delivering top-notch #ecological services safely and with confidence. 👉 We’d like to extend a big ‘Thank You’ to Luis at First Aid Education for his engaging delivery and interesting anecdotes. It made our experience all the more enjoyable. 📢If you participate in or organize fieldwork yourself, what do you consider to be the biggest challenge and how do you prepare? Have you had to use first aid training in the field yourself while at work? Do you feel that first aid training should be compulsory? We’d love to hear your thoughts and any top tips in the comments below!👇👇👇 #FieldworkSafety #TeamBuilding #Ecology #FirstAid #LusciniaEcology #ProfessionalDevelopment #EmergencyPreparedness #FirstAidEducation #Teambuilding

Our Directors latest thoughts on BNG. We’d love to hear your overall thoughts/pain points and triumphs with BNG. Do you feel further clarification/simplification is needed? Is this a leap forward in the right direction? Let us know in the comments section below. #BNG #BiodiversityNetGain #PropertyDevelopment #Ecology
I’ve waited. I’ve given it ~4 weeks since BNG came into full force. Here are my three top thoughts on BNG in practice. This is from the perspective of having undertaken BNG Assessments since 2017, and BNG offsetting since 2019… 🙈 Thought 1: I see some evil. It doesn’t really work at a small scale. On the one hand, Luscinia Ecology Ltd has assessments for 200/300/400 Resi schemes with some healthy BNG margins. On the other hand, we've many small-scale schemes (1-9 units) locked into ‘unworkable-simply-just-offset-and-good-design-doesn’t-really-help’ situations. Got a tree in your site? Pay. Site mostly green? Pay. No public open space? Pay. Stream nearby...Good luck. (I’m channeling Henry Hill in Goodfellas here, for those who know the film). I am always upfront and I advise from the outset if BNG is likely to be achieved, but I still feel rogue taking on BNG assessments for small sites… I’d rather small sites simply paid a contribution, because effectively I’m being paid to tell you how much you need to pay and the outcome is the same but with more steps. These consultancy fees would be better off as a BNG contribution, with wider policy ensuring good design. This would mean more money for conservation and less aggravation. 🙊Thought 2. I’ll speak my evil. Preparedness. This one is quick and easy. No one really seems that prepared and the guidance, commentary, and the possible outcomes are ‘endless’. The prevalence of unpreparedness is causing confusion for all parties. I sense some large ‘my brain hurts’ flow chart. We'll put this together for release on Linked In in due course. 🙉Thought 3. I’ll hear no evil of it. I still love it and think it’s the best environmental driver since I started my career. It Is pushing collaboration, better technical design, and more money into environmental conservation. If you’re looking for support (scheme big or small), I’m happy to advise you. If you or your team are in the South and would like a presentation on Mandatory Biodiversity Net Gain, feel free to message me. And finally, if you just want to call or post a comment to discuss how much you love BNG too, then I’m all ears. 🐒
