ROBIN'S DIARY A true leader! The very best leaders, whether they lead a family, a department, a company, or the country, all have problems to overcome. Some will be historical, some will be material, and some will be self-inflicted. Whatever the problems are, there are two ways to deal with them: blame someone else or find the best solution. Most importantly, inspire your group so they have confidence and will get on board and follow your lead. If you are in the deepest mess, and someone is trying to shoot you in a war, which historically is where many great leaders have shone, there is no point blaming someone for the past, it’s unlikely it would keep you alive. Over the years, we have relied upon great tacticians and leaders to save our skins and get us out of a mess. That’s what great leaders do. They use the past to learn from, but not as an excuse. They work out the best way forward and make sure it’s inspiring – most importantly, they don’t ask someone to do something they wouldn’t or couldn’t do. Leaders are workers, maybe not always physically, but they have a massive responsibility to those who look for leadership… and it’s worth its weight in gold! “The greatest leader is not necessarily the one who does the greatest things. He is the one that gets the people to do the greatest things.”— Ronald Reagan

ROBIN'S DIARY Such a shame, don’t let it happen to you… The news this week about Sir Chris Hoy is devasting. Even with me banging the drum about Prostate Cancer, it wouldn’t have helped, because my advice was for men over 50, and his has already spread at just 48! What makes this so shocking is that if we had a screening programme, as many others do, and it had been diagnosed early, Sir Chris, like many others, could have been back on his bike in 8 weeks, enjoying a full life, not a life sentence. I have just returned from a bike event in France and I have learned that in France they get tested every year, certainly from 50, as a matter of course. I appreciate the NHS is on a tight budget, but the cost of a blood test is so small, and the cost of terminal cancer treatment is so high! Surely introducing a screening programme must be a priority. Hopefully, a high-profile case like Sir Chris Hoy's will help gather momentum and support for it. Rather than injecting people to lose weight to get them working, the NHS can really save lives! "Do not wait; the time will never be 'just right.' Start where you stand." – Napoleon Hill

ROBIN'S DIARY It’s not what you do, it’s how you do it! Whilst a big part of our business is selling cars, I have always believed the best way to do that is to make it enjoyable for the buyer so they buy what they want rather than being sold—hence why we have a strapline: " We won’t sell you a car, but we will help you buy one.” 14 years ago, when we started the business, I was told it was all about process. Fortunately, I took no notice and followed my own beliefs! It is therefore both amusing and heart-warming when I not only hear the very same strapline copied by our competitors, but consultants and trainers even copy it! The difficult part, like everyone who has tried to copy the likes of Apple or Rolex will know, is that it’s a culture, not a slogan, so, if reality doesn’t match the expectation, it all comes tumbling down. Therefore, when customers' feedback that the reality was as expected and they were helped, not pressured, it gives me great satisfaction - and I feel honoured my strapline, not my culture, is being copied. “People don't buy what you do; they buy why you do it.” — Simon Sinek

ROBIN'S DIARY If you can’t control it, don’t worry about it. With everything happening in the world today, not to mention what might be happening in your world, remember one thing: if you can’t affect or change it, there is no point worrying about it. Focus all your efforts on what you can influence. The world and the news might be full of bad stuff, but look for the opportunity for something good in your life, your circle of friends, work and family and make something good happen. We all need little wins, little bits of good, something positive to make us feel better. That is what makes us happy, and that’s way better than focusing on the bad stuff, and waiting for it to get worse. We can all help someone, do something good, make something better. It’s just a matter of thinking and looking for opportunities, not problems. "Worry never robs tomorrow of its sorrow, it only saps today of its joy."– Leo Buscaglia

ROBIN'S DIARY Not-so free market…. Unfortunately, the car industry and consumer choice are now being restricted artificially by legislation regarding the supply and sale of new cars. As predicted here, the sale of hybrid, petrol and diesel cars is strictly limited until January so that manufacturers can balance their sales with those of fully electric cars, all due to legislation. This means we are where we were a few years ago when the supply of cars was limited due to lockdown issues. The good news is that prices for EVs will be forced down, which is great news if an EV fits your circumstances, but bad news if it doesn’t. Like most things, there will be winners and losers. The big winners will be those making a move from petrol to EV, as used petrol cars will be in short supply, and the EV cheaper. However, for those wanting to stay with petrol power, this will just be the start of legislation, not manufacturers, forcing the change, simply by reducing the choice and availability. As I’ve said before, don’t blame the dealers or manufacturers, this is driven totally by legislation driving the increase in electric vehicles and the drive to totally remove the choice to buy anything but an EV over the next 5 years. "More laws, more restrictions, and more government interference only serve to narrow the range of choice for individuals and businesses alike." Ron Paul

ROBIN'S DIARY Posh raffles, gambling, it’s too much for me… We are constantly being told we are suffering a financial crisis, low wages, high prices, and no money, yet we are all repeatedly bombarded with offers to gamble – be it on a sporting event, bingo, raffles for million-pound houses, phone-line raffles (so-called competitions) and the like! They must be successful for whoever is behind them because the cost to advertise them isn’t cheap – and let’s face it, they are not doing it for love - it’s all for profit and it’s all a gamble. When I was young, the only way to gamble was on the football pools or in a grubby bookmaker’s shop. Nowadays it’s fashionable, it’s trendy and the marketing departments have done a great job making it mainstream and normal. We are told the country is broke - it needs more money, we need to be more productive - but gambling doesn’t produce anything other than profit for the bookmakers and hardship for all but a select few. If the country needs to increase its revenue, would it work to tax winnings as unearned income, with capital gains tax? What’s the difference between going to work all your life, saving up for your old age, and then being taxed, as opposed to gambling all your life, saving nothing and expecting the country or hard-working savers to bail you out? "In gambling, the many must lose in order that the few may win." George Bernard Shaw
