Celebrating our 2025 RIAS Awards shortlist: Caochan na Creige by Izat Arundell With a name meaning 'little hidden one by the rock’, Caochan na Creige is a hand-built house in the Outer Hebrides. The home's sculptural form is designed around a substantial Lewisian Gneiss rock that dominates the site, with living spaces wrapping around this natural feature. This creates a soft 135-degree angle that is used throughout the home, offering a nod to the intertwined relationship between the house and its setting. A significant moment for our retrofit project as last week our first low carbon facade system test panel was craned into place by the Ecosystems Technologies and Clark Contracts teams to assess and iron out any technical glitches before full installation commences in the coming weeks. Celebrating World Engineering Day What better way to mark #WorldEngineeringDay than by showcasing real-world sustainable solutions in action? At Raasay House, drilling is underway for a Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP) system, as we support the project through RIBA Stages 3 and 4. This system will provide low-carbon heating while preserving the heritage of this historic site. Engineering for a sustainable future isn’t one-size-fits-all. The right solution depends on factors like ground conditions, available space, and building demand—and for Raasay House, a GSHP was the best fit.
