  • 💚 ⚡ A new Uswitch report has ranked Luton as one of the top 10 local authorities in the country for energy-efficient social housing. 👏 A great achievement from our Building and Technical Services team and Asset Management team that not only helps our tenants save on their energy bills but also reduces our carbon footprint & helps to tackle climate change! 💬 Responding to the report, Cllr Tom Shaw, Cabinet member for Population Wellbeing (Strategic Housing and Climate Change) said: “We are proud that Luton Council is ranked tenth in the UK for Energy Efficiency Score for social housing. This is a remarkable achievement by our Building and Technical Services team and Asset Management team, who have put a lot of time and resources into council properties, which are well insulated, along with the installation of efficient heating systems. These efforts not only help tenants save on their energy bills but also play an important part in reducing our carbon footprint and tackling climate change.”

  • A group of 19 non-Muslim Luton Council staff abstained from food, drink and water between 4.52am-6.01pm on Tuesday 11 March in support, solidarity and friendship with their Muslim colleagues and councillors who are observing Ramadan. In what was a lovely return gesture, a number of Muslim councillors and staff prepared and brought food so they could all break the fast together at an evening Iftar inside the Town Hall. The day was a great example of people of different faiths, and none, coming together to enjoy each other’s company, learn from one another and showcase Luton’s incredible community spirit. The initiative was also an opportunity to raise money for the CAP Foundations Orphan Village in Bangladesh, an inspiring project which will save the lives of very young vulnerable children who are facing exploitation and dangers on the streets. Luton Mayor Councillor Tahmina Saleem, who prepared and brought food for the evening Iftar, said: “Fasting brought us together in the shared experience of hunger and thirst which is not easy to do, much respect and gratitude for the officers that came up with and participated in this wonderful initiative to raise money for the less fortunate which is the spirit of Ramadan. I encourage anyone who can, to donate to the Orphan Village.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/eqMt3WgF Find out about the Orphan Village and donate: https://lnkd.in/enDbN4HV

It is always nice for the Luton Council team to be called ‘remarkable and special’. It is with delight that we have now published our Corporate Peer Challenge progress review. It notes that we have made significant strides over the last 9 months towards achieving Luton’s 2040 Vision and progress, guided by the Peer Review recommendations received in March 2024. Peers stated that they are confident that team Luton Council will continue to build on the remarkable progress we have made since the peer review. https://lnkd.in/eC_ybvDc

  • 💬 🏘️ Yesterday, our Domestic Energy Efficiency Manager Shabir Hussain gave evidence to MPs on the challenges the council has faced with widespread issue of rogue traders installing poor-quality home insulation on resident’s homes. Shabir along with colleagues across the council have worked tirelessly to support affected residents. However, this has been a significant challenge as the schemes are government-led initiatives managed by external bodies. We welcome the focus of this inquiry and the recent decision by government to take action against those rogue traders offering substandard insulation. 📰 Read more 👉 https://lnkd.in/ef7gfsRe 📺 Watch the evidence session in full 👉 https://lnkd.in/eTiv5Pv4
