A massive congratulations to Norton Folgate for being shortlisted for the Net Zero Award at the Building Awards 2024! 🏆 A remarkable commercial mixed-use project by British Land, located in London’s historic Spitalfields, Norton Folgate is a shining example of sustainable development. Blending Victorian heritage with contemporary design, the project champions circular economy principles and material reuse to achieve outstanding carbon reductions.🌍 The new development also features distinct façades for each surrounding building, including 16 Blossom Street, which reflects the aesthetic of nearby historic warehouses. The brickwork uses Michelmersh’s Danehill Yellow and Lindfield Yellow bricks, installed by Thorp Precast Limited blends contemporary style with the area’s rich heritage. Meanwhile, at 15 Norton Folgate, Morris+Company has created office and retail spaces using Michelmersh’s Floren Gothiek Brick, expertly laid by Lyons & Annoot Ltd. Delivered by four architectural practices, the project hit LETI 2030 targets for upfront carbon and is close to reaching RIBA 2025 goals for whole-life embodied carbon. It retained 39.3% of existing structures, recycled 99.7% of waste, and introduced innovative solutions like air-source heat pumps and an all-electric design, all while using locally sourced materials. #Sustainability #NetZero #BuildingAwards2024 #SustainableDesign #Construction

We look forward to working with Lenny, Liam and Dyan and seeing how they grow and develop their skills. If you would like to find out more about the various Apprenticeships we offer and how we can help you take control of the future of your business, utilising Government funding and scoping your workforce, please get in touch. Saturday Rant: I saw a brilliant post earlier on utilising the thousands of diploma students in college by giving them qualifications that will enable them to work sooner. On this I completely agree 8 years ago I was asked by somebody in CITB what I would do with diploma courses in brickwork and I said “cancel them, Fund apprenticeships more and let college and contractors work together to build up a better trained workforce”. However colleges are financially rewarded by having full time courses, more than part time apprentices and also there are not enough companies willing to invest in the same way that we have in apprenticeships. We need apprenticeships and we need training but it doesn’t take away from some facts: 366k leave school every year- by 2027 construction needs 225k- so 31% of the available school leavers have to come into construction and no other industry- and we need growth year on year. That’s assuming that we take everyone from schools and not other industries or prison or get a better immigration policy in place, or become more productive! They are frightening figures above! We need to have younger people embrace construction earlier, we need to PR blitz our industry as the place to work, we need consistency of delivery of construction to show it’s not a business where every 8-10 years you may loose your job due to a dip. We need to look at ways of enhancing our work ability by skills from other nations or prisons or other industry. Did you know that under todays rules if the Common Travel area wasn’t in place with Ireland the likes of Ray O’Rourke, John Murphy, Patsy Byrne would not be able to work here and start the huge business that they did under the immigration rules- how about if by not having something a little bit more open with the rest of Europe we are missing out on the next generation of super builders. How about for every one apprentice you take on you can have someone on a visa- who would need to be directly employed so would be key to more tax to the economy also. Apprenticeships are key to our survival as an industry but industry will only thrive as it is with looking at all opportunities that are open to us. And I say all of the above as one of the Top 50 SME Apprentice Employers in the country- we need to do more early doors and we need to do more once in to continue in generating our future. #brickwork #bricklayers #apprenticeships #apprentices
