August is #ImmunisationMonth and an opportunity to celebrate the vital role vaccines play in global health.   Vaccines prevent an estimated 2-3 million deaths annually and dramatically improve the quality of life for millions worldwide. Notable successes include the eradication of smallpox and the near elimination of polio, with cases reduced by 99% since the introduction of the polio vaccine. The measles vaccine alone has led to a 73% decline in measles-related deaths worldwide since 2000, while the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine could prevent up to 90% of cervical cancer cases. The COVID-19 vaccine, first authorised in December 2020, marked a historic milestone in medicine. Developed at unprecedented speed, this vaccine significantly reduced the spread of the virus and prevented severe illness, showcasing the power of modern vaccine technology. In recognition of Psoriasis Awareness Month, it’s important to highlight the ongoing efforts to advance dermatological research for the millions of people affected by psoriasis worldwide. With approximately 125 million people living with this chronic condition, continuous innovation in research is vital. MAC has been an active participant in advancing this research, having conducted 8 psoriasis studies over the past 5 years, and more than 20 dermatology studies overall. Dr Aliya Asher, Chief Medical Officer at MAC Clinical Research has extensive experience in dermatology. Dr Asher has acted as Chief Investigator, PI, and Sub-I on several dermatology trials conducted at MAC, including First-in-Human (FIH) through later phases, for treatments for atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, and psoriatic arthritis. We are inviting sponsors and industry experts to tour our Early Phase Unit (EPU) in Manchester, UK. Our EPU is an MHRA-audited and accredited Phase I centre, located within and supported by the Manchester University Foundation Trust, where we specialise in Healthy Volunteer and Patient Recruitment in Phase I-II studies. It is equipped with a 32-bed unit for high-intensity safety monitoring and four ensuite rooms where patients and carers can be housed simultaneously where required. It’s also where we house our state-of-the-art laboratory, which offers sample reception, clinical pathology, and bioanalytical services, as well as our in-house dedicated scientific services, where we provide unique, non-routine scientific techniques and assessments. This location is surrounded by MAC’s fully owned network of late phase sites, which allows a stream of referred trial participants from a population of over 30 million people, and, based on a hospital site, the unit has the advantage of being fully supported 24/7 by the NHS emergency response services. This allows us to conduct studies that are First-in-Human or involve dose escalation while adhering to our strict code of conduct and procedures.
