WELCOME MATT AND ALEX We are delighted to welcome two new senior appointments to strengthen our MadiganGill Resource Regional development team, Matthew Dew and Alex Worlock who will focus on growing our coverage in Bristol and the South West. Matt is taking the helm at our Bristol office as Regional Manager for the South West and Wales. Alex will be joining him as Labour Manager With both being Bristol ‘born and bred’ these additions for MadiganGIll Resource will reinforce our commitment to the area and the start of even more beautiful relationships. Matt says “I can't wait to contribute to the growth of the West and Wales region and I am already looking to connect with construction people to explore how our services can bring value to them.” He’s looking to arrange meetings and hit the ground running as soon as possible. APPRENTICES NIGHT OUT Not that we need much of a reason for a get-together, but to mark the occasion of the completion of our first cohort of apprentices who achieved their Waste Management apprenticeship - with all of them passing the final exam - we took the opportunity to have a celebratory night out. Adam Webster - Head of HR at MadiganGill remarked “It's wonderful seeing the great spirit amongst everyone, and to make our celebration even more special - we had a mini photo album created for all those involved and had a great time going through the photos and remembering many of the wonderful times we shared”. It's also fantastic, that all the apprentices will remain with us - continuing their training and development and moving into supervisory roles. Tony Ball, Managing Director for Logistics and Demolition commented on the outcome of the scheme. “We are delighted that all our apprentices have done so well and consider their success as part of our investment in the future of MadiganGIll and the construction industry”. THIS SUICIDE PREVENTION DAY... 🗓 The 10th of September is Suicide Prevention Suicide Day and organisations and communities around the world come together to raise awareness of how we can create a better world where fewer people die by suicide. It is a sad statistic, that every single day in the UK two construction workers take their own life. This is why this day is important, as on a broader front - suicide statistics show that in the UK more than 6,800 people died by suicide. Every life lost to suicide is a tragedy because we know that it's preventable and not inevitable. This world suicide prevention day we’re highlighting the importance of being proactive. MadiganGill works closely with The Lighthouse Charity who help and supports people to talk about mental health and suicide. This year their theme is ‘Change the Narrative’ which encourages people to break down the stigma and talk more openly about mental health and suicide without the fear of judgment. To further this cause, on our sites, we have carried out talks in line with the Lighthouse Charity for ‘Blue Monday’ and ‘Make It Visible’, letting our frontline team know about the free well-being support available to them and how to access this help.   It’s important for all of us to feel we have a safe environment to speak up and have open and honest conversations about mental health and suicide prevention, as well as feel valued and supported, ensuring our well-being and those around us. WHEN INNOVATION IS A BREATH OF FRESH AIR MadiganGill is always on the lookout for safer, better, and more innovative ways of improving the workplace. Especially when it involves putting technology into action. This month we begin trialing a range of powered personal air purifying respirators (PAPRs) designed for high protection, comfort, and safety. CleanSpace Technology Airflow masks provide reliable protection due to their fitted nature, also providing workers with facial hair the protection they need. This initiative is another great example of our MadiganGill Way sessions and was recommended for testing by our internal focus team. We then moved on from the discussion stage to put into motion a full test on-site, investing in the kit for a trial. So far so good, with testing already taking place at MadiganGill Logistics sites at 76 Upper Ground, Southbank for Multiplex and at Victoria House for Wates Group Construction. As part of our rigorous testing, we roped in Tony Ball, Managing Director for MadiganGill Logistics and Principle Demolition who was keen to try the masks for himself, and was definitely pleased with the initial results. Rob Hunt, Health & Safety Manager for MadiganGill also trialed the masks to gain a deeper insight on how we could promote them on-site. Over the next few months we will continue to monitor these masks and then once proven, bring them into the mainstream of our everyday operations. Women in the construction industry This week we see Women’s Equality Day, but as far as we are concerned at MadiganGill that’s everyday We believe that equality and opportunity are key for not just attracting more women into construction, but for better business. In 2023, women in the UK construction industry accounted for 15% of the workforce, with only one in seven construction workers being women. Attracting more women to a career in construction is essential if the skills shortage is to be closed. Women bring a diverse range of skills which will benefit employers and enrich the construction industry. THE BEAUTIFUL GAME ⚽ We were excited to be part of the St George PLC Charity Football Tournament this month which helped raise an incredible £81,000 and has made a massive contribution to the Berkeley Foundation which is committed to raising over £650,000 to support its charity partners. These funds will be used to support food deliveries for those living in poverty, video counselling sessions for young people struggling with mental health, providing additional staff to enable a youth charity to have 1:1 support, and more. Our MadiganGill Logistics team did us proud as always, and although we did not come away with the trophies, we were delighted to take part again, the third year in a row.
