Yesterday, the government announced the Children's Wellbeing Bill that includes a requirement for free school breakfast clubs in every primary school. Today, we are launching our #BreakfastPowersOpportunity campaign to make this commitment a reality! 📢 Across the UK, 1 in 5 children are at risk of morning hunger. That’s why the new bill is something to celebrate and feel hopeful about, but our journey isn’t over yet. Join our campaign today ➡ https://utm.guru/uheas ⬅ and tell us in the comments how breakfast powers your day. Together, we can ensure that no child starts their school day too hungry to learn. 📚 #NoChildTooHungryToLearn #ChildrensWellbeingBill #Education #SchoolBreakfasts

About us
Magic Breakfast is a registered charity in England and Scotland. The charity focuses on reaching children in disadvantaged areas of the UK, forming partnerships with schools to ensure all their pupils at risk of hunger have access to a healthy meal, without barrier or stigma, at the start of the school day. Magic Breakfast provides the expertise and food – including low sugar cereals, porridge and bagels, all complying with School Food Standards - schools provide the facilities and staff. The charity was established in 2003 by Carmel McConnell MBE in response to 5 head teachers telling her that the biggest obstacle to them being able to teach was hunger among their pupils. Today, we are offering breakfasts to around 200,000 children in primary, secondary, SEN/ALS schools and pupil referral units. School breakfast provision has been shown to improve educational outcomes for disadvantaged children. Independent research by the Education Endowment Foundation and Institute for Fiscal Studies, found that children in Yr2 who were offered a free, nutritious Magic Breakfast boosted their reading, writing and maths results by an average of two months’ progress over the course of a year. A study, published in Feb 2021 by Pro Bono Economics, Magic Breakfast and Heinz, found that providing disadvantaged pupils completing KS1/Primary 3 with a year’s supply of school breakfast provision could generate long-term economic benefits in excess of £9,000 per child.

Today marks the start of #ChallengePoverty Week in Scotland, where 26% of children are currently living in poverty. We know that poverty is one of the leading causes of child morning hunger. 🍽️ In Scotland, 42% of children living in poverty live in households with marginal, low, or very low food security. As members of the @povertyalliance , we’ve been able to collaborate on the policies the collective will focus on: 💷 Improve dignified and ‘cash first’ food insecurity responses, including boosting the value and administrative responsiveness of the Scottish Welfare Fund. 🛒 Push supermarkets to commit to setting the lowest prices, including cutting prices, on key basic food items. 🍳 Deliver universal free school breakfast and lunch provision to all pupils in Scotland. We’re very excited to see breakfast on the Challenge Poverty agenda and will be joining with other voices on Thursday morning as part of the Challenge Poverty Week Breakfast Briefings to call for change now. Join us on Thursday morning 🔗 https://bit.ly/4dwhYmr #CPW24 #ChildPoverty #ChildHunger #BreakfastCantWait

We welcome the announcement from Rt Hon Rachel Reeves of a pilot to test and understand how the Government’s commitment to school breakfast provision can best be rolled out. 🎉 It will be key for there to be a variety of schools, with different geographic and socio-economic challenges; adequate support to maximise the impact of provision for pupils; and a robust impact monitoring framework to guide and enable learning. This is a vital opportunity for the Department for Education to understand how they ensure that no child is too hungry to learn and the benefits of breakfast are realised. #ChildrensWellbeingBill #LPC24 #BreakfastPowersOpportunity https://lnkd.in/ewgCehNf
