Another brilliant story we just knew we had to share in honour of AAC Awareness Month - Christian Wilson, a local man from Warwickshire with verbal dyspraxia found his voice thanks to a brand new AAC device that allows him to communicate in a voice/accent that he can closely indentify with. With his past experiences using off-the-shelf systems that felt too robotic and not true to the voice he had always hoped for, Christian has finally found himself and his voice through his new AAC device: "It's a dream come true - when I first heard my new voice I cried solidly for five minutes thinking about all the things I could do”. #aac #aacawarenessmonth #aacdevices #dyspraxia #verbaldyspraxia #warwickshire

Today, 22 October is International Stammering/Stuttering Awareness Day! This year’s theme is ‘The Power of Listening’, and we’re swapping our Magic Words brand colours for sea green in support of the Stammering Pride movement! ⭐️ We recently signed an open letter to Samsung started by the brilliant team at SPACE (Stuttering, People, Arts, Community, Education) calling attention to Samsung’s Impulse watch app; at its core, the technology perpetuates, rather than improves, real issues faced by people who stammer and actively undermines their own ideals. We’ve included a video posted to our TikTok and Instagram reels today, where Frankie Paterson (Magic Words Director & Specialist SaLT in Stammering) talks in more depth about why we felt it was so important to sign the open letter as an organisation. To learn more about the campaign and to sign the open letter as an individual or as an organisation, visit: spacetostutter.org/impulse Together, we can #stopthestigma and highlight the importance of #inclusivecommunication! #ISAD2024 #stammering #stammeringawareness #stuttering #stutteringawareness #speechandlanguagetherapy #speechtherapy #speechlanguagetherapy

With AAC Awareness Month in full swing, we want to amplify and highlight the voices and lived experiences of AAC users, ambassadors and advocates. Beth's message is an absolutely brilliant (and essential one); an important reminder for us to 'listen to hear'. To practice the same level of active listening regardless of who we are engaging in conversations with. Give AAC users your undivided attention, just as you would anyone else. Regardless if the conversation requires seconds or minutes of focus to allow your communication partner to finish their thought/complete their thought, be mindful that you're staying engaged and don't try to interrupt or speak for them to tell them what you think they're trying to say.
Doctor of Health (hc) 2024 | Professional AAC advocate | BA (Hons) Social Policy 1st | Paralympian Tokyo 2020, Disability Power 100 2023: Community Advocate | Keynote speaker | Workshop Leader | Mentor | Expert AAC user
When did you last listen to hear rather than listen to respond? Active listening means stopping, waiting, listening to the words, tone and pace, observing body language and then creating meaning before affirming understanding. With natural speech this may all take just seconds and is part of the flow of interaction. Usually it means we don’t interrupt, talk over or assume what our communication partner is going to say. By listening to hear we process the incoming message and give a balanced response. When we use AAC to communicate this intentional ‘listening’ behaviour needed by our communication partners can sometimes take minutes of focus whilst patiently waiting for the #AAC user to complete their message. It might be hard to maintain your attention whilst waiting but we appreciate you not looking at your watch, checking your messages, having a side conversation or walking off. Hearing our whole message and responding appropriately validates what we have to say, stops assumptions and misunderstandings and makes us ‘feel seen’. Thank you. We’re posting in purple and yellow today in honour of DLD (Developmental Language Disorder) Awareness Day, also known as #DLDday. This year’s theme is ‘Speak Up For DLD!’ ⭐️ Our core brand colours are teal and yellow, but we’ve swapped out teal for purple today to coordinate with the official awareness colours for DLD. You’ll likely see people online and in-person from all over finding their own creative ways to raise awareness for DLD by lighting up the world in shades of purple and yellow! 💜💛 DLD is far more common than you might think. Research shows, on average, 2 children in every class of 30 students* will experience DLD severe enough to hinder their academic progress (*Frazier Norbury et al. 2016). DLD causes difficulties with understanding, as well as with using words and sentences to express ideas, feelings, wants and needs - for no known reason. Here at Magic Words, our expert team of speech and language therapists are certified and trained to provide evidence based, quality therapy to help children with DLD. We start by assessing each child’s individual needs and then work to design a treatment plan that centres around the goals, aspirations and expectations of both the child and their family. We’ve compiled a few fantastic DLD resources from DLD advocacy and awareness organisations: RADLD - DLD Workplace Strategies: https://lnkd.in/gFMihaZw Speech and Language UK - Support for Children and Young People with DLD: https://lnkd.in/ej_qhJEx AFASIC - DLD, Key Information and Resources: https://lnkd.in/e7W5b3Y4 Share this post, spread the word and let’s #speakupforDLD! 💜💛 #developmentallanguagedisorder #DLDday2024 #languagedisorders #speechandlanguagetherapy #speechtherapy #speechpathology

Another year, another magical 2-day adventure in London exhibiting at the Tes SEND Show! ⭐️ We always have such a great time connecting and having wonderful conversations with attendees - and this year was no exception! In fact, we think our stand was the busiest it has ever been, so it was a huge success in our eyes! Thank you to everyone who stopped by to say hello, to learn all about our speech and language therapy services and to take part in our AAC Awareness Month Creative Communication Challenge. Most attendees participated and we were beyond proud to have so many people open to learning about and exploring all different forms of augmentative and alternative communication! While we’re on the topic of our AAC Awareness Month challenge, a winner will be selected at random to receive our curated ‘Sensational Sensory Toy Therapy Set’ and we will announce the results by email this coming week to all entrants - that way you’ll know if you won either way! We’re already looking forward to next year’s #TesSENDshow - see you again at the BDC in 2025! ⭐️ #tessendshow2024 #businessdesigncentre #aacawarenessmonth #vibesofaac #speechandlanguage #speechandlanguagetherapy

This very useful document is important for anybody that works within the EHCP process. It is unfortunate that our independent representative body has felt the need to have to create this document. It spells out the obvious - those Speech and Language Therapists that work in independent practice are held to the same standards and ethics as those working for the NHS and Local Authorities. Organisations shouldn't be picking and choosing when independent professionals are listened to in the EHCP process, our professional advice should be considered at every stage where it is presented, and if it gets to appeal stage it is legally enforced that it will be considered. #EHCP #independentSaLT #SENDappeal

Today, 1st October, marks the start of AAC Awareness Month (Augmentative & Alternative Communication) ⭐️ This year’s theme ‘Vibes of AAC’ is encouraging everyone to celebrate the beauty of AAC through everyday activities like: reading stories, watching videos, making music, hosting social events ie. afternoon tea, dinner parties, etc. Throughout the month, we’ll be: sharing resources and educational content focused on AAC, diving a bit deeper into the value and importance of AAC for both clients and our therapists/assistant practitioners alike, and so much more! What does AAC Awareness Month mean to you? How has AAC impacted your life or the lives of those closest to you? Chime in and share your thoughts in the comments below! #AAC #AACAwarenessMonth #vibesofaac #augmentativeandalternativecommunication #speechandlanguagetherapy #speechandlanguage
