Hi everyone, I’m Michelle Jardine Chartered Institute of Fundraising (Dip) 👋 I’m thrilled to be celebrating my three-year anniversary at Make-A-Wish® UK! Being part of an organisation that creates magical memories for families facing devastating news, such as a child's cancer diagnosis or urgent heart transplant need, fills me with immense pride. The past three years have brought many proud moments as well as challenges including: new ways of working, staff changes, and an ambitious strategy. Throughout this, I’ve had the incredible opportunity to work collaboratively across several projects. From generating hundreds of thousands of pounds in new business and securing six-figure partnerships to working with Senior Leadership to renew and steward existing partnerships, it been a jam-packed three years! It’s also been truly rewarding to a part of the development and delivery team for our Wish Teams workshop project. This has been a great corporate engagement tool. It has helped us grant wishes through gift-in-kind and our network of volunteers. Outside of the day-to-day, Make-A-Wish has some amazing opportunities which I’ve enjoyed. Key standouts include: - volunteering at the memorable Art of Wishes Ball and the magical moments at A Disney Wish, where witnessing bespoke wishes brought me to tears and left a lasting memory. ⭐ - taking on my first Wish Discovery, with a little girl that wanted a laptop because her family of five shared one device and she needed her own for her GCSE exams. 💻 - training as a mental health First Aider and providing active support to my colleagues and peers has been so rewarding. 🧠 - represented the charity at the Vitality and the Hackney Half Marathon this year, running a time of 2 hours and 13 seconds. The 13 seconds is a bit annoying! 🏃 Gosh, I’m super proud of my Make-A-Wish Journey, the wonderful people I’ve worked with the challenges that I’ve overcome and learnt from, as well as the income generation that has enabled us to deliver thousands of magical wishes! If you’d like to get involved in helping us to build communities around the many wish children that are waiting, I would love to hear from you! At the age of 10, Jacob has already been through several major surgeries and aggressive treatments for brain tumours. Although regular MRI monitoring shows there’s still something there, he’s currently stable. Today, we’re sharing Jacob’s wish, and why it was so important for him ✨ When Jacob started intensive treatments, it was difficult for him to adjust. Mum told us: “Jacob is autistic, so he loves routine. He really struggled when we first got to London with all the change. But once we found our routine he loved it so much that he has his hospital gown and mask up on his bedroom wall at home. It’s a testament to the people on the ward, they were brilliant and made his time there so much fun.” Jacob received treatment from a specialist team in the Proton Beam Therapy Department at University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. 🏥 When talking to our Wishgranters about what he might want as his wish, Jacob and mum mentioned about revisiting London. “He wanted to do the whole day again, be in the same hotel we stayed in whilst he was in hospital, go to the same bus stop and go on the same bus. He loved that routine. He wanted to go back to his hospital room and look out the window at the BT tower. He wanted to listen to the tune that the hotel we were staying at had. All the details meant so much to him.” On the day of his wish, Jacob and his family headed back to London to explore. They rode on the London Eye, cruised down the Thames on a boat tour and much more! Importantly, he also returned to the ward and had a party with all of the team who had been by his side throughout his treatment. 💙 “The whole wish was incredible. When we were there before he wasn't in a fit state to do anything. Out of the window there was a little park that he couldn't even go to. So being able to do all those things meant so much to Jacob. Doing it all one last time and taking pictures with the radiographers, nurses and doctors has given us some lovely memories of the department. I couldn't make that happen for him by myself, so the fact that Make-A-Wish was able to do it is incredible.” ⭐ #MakeAWishUK #UCLH #NHSEngland NHS England

    • Jacob is sat on his bed with his legs crisscrossed in the hospital ward. He is wearing his glasses, a multi-coloured star hospital gown and has a pink blanket over his legs. He is smiling for the camera and holding a present wrapped in starry blue paper. On the front is a certificate which says: ‘This is to certify that Jacob has successfully completed Proton Beam Therapy’.
    • Jacob is stood in front of a Proton Beam Therapy Machine where he had treatment. He has his arms raised in the air above his head and is grinning. Jacob is wearing a blue embroidered Make-A-Wish UK baseball cap, grey trainers, black shorts and a white top with ‘London 2024’ printed on the front. The shirt has been signed by various specialists in the Proton Beam Therapy Department at University College London Hospitals’ Trust.
    • Jacob is stood in his living room at home and smiling for the camera. He is wearing a black t-shirt with silver writing which says: “Brain tumour, would not recommend.” There are five stars also printed on the t-shirt but only one is coloured in.

“He walked in and saw Dan; at that point his face went up. I couldn't see his face properly, but I could tell that it had a huge smile on it! When Dan complimented his t-shirt, he was so happy it made his day! Dan made him feel so comfortable and listened to him.” – Kayleigh, Mikey’s mum. Mikey (8) was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at just three weeks old. From daily medication, physiotherapy and isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic, to regular scans and x-rays in the hospital, gaming and watching Dan TDM’s videos offer a much-needed distraction for Mikey. 🎮 As part of #Wish200Week, the incredible Dan TDM granted Mikey’s wish to meet him. ✨ For children like Mikey, wishes are an urgently needed experience, bringing happiness and joy, an escape away from their condition. As Mum said: “It’s been so helpful to have people who take Mikey’s needs into consideration. Thank you to everyone at Make-A-Wish UK, Dan TDM and his team!” 💙 Your support can help us grant more wishes to children living with life-threatening or life-limiting illnesses just like Mikey.
