If an investor is only interested because you're offering them a discount valuation, then they're not really interested. Valuation is important. But an investor should be interested because they can build conviction around what you're building in the market you're building in and the team that's building; not because you've offered them a discount.

🔍 The problem with all the "This is how investors think" content is that it assumes all investors think the same, look at the world the same, and want the same thing. 📈 Yes, they all care about outsized returns. But how investors think about getting there differs drastically. Some have different attitudes towards risk, the importance of founders having built before, co-founders vs. sole founders, market sizing, go-to-market strategies, and technology trends. 🎯 That means you have to hyper-personalize your approach. Understand your target investors in significant detail about how they see the world. Look at their portfolio businesses, what they talk about on X and LinkedIn, and their websites. ❌ And when you get a No - and you'll get a lot of Nos - that doesn't always mean what you're doing isn't right. It means you're not right for them, and they're not right for you.

Super thrilled to finally share another of my deals at Glenluna Ventures - GigPig's £1.3m seed raise led by Chris Tottman at Notion Capital and Haatch with Manchester Angels participating. I'm lucky enough to work with some brilliant founders and investors as clients each and every day; sometimes those clients turn into close friends. Michael Forster and Kit Muir-Rogers are simply brilliant and genuinely a true privilege to include them in the latter category along with the braindump king Chris Tottman. Congrats guys - we got there! https://lnkd.in/etpPqNdP

🚀 Last week was 🔥 for Manchester Startups! 📅 On Wednesday,Silicon Mingle launched in Manchester after rocking Newcastle. It was all about networking, no panels, no workshops, just connecting with fellow tech and startup enthusiasts. Super lucky to meet Laura Malins (employee #8 at Matillion on her last day) and Raj Mahapatra from Wilson Sonsini. Big shoutout to Fernando Torres and Vladimir Mulhem for organising! 👏 💼 Thursday was epic! Turing Innovation Catalyst Manchester, Cambridge Angels, and Manchester Angels hosted a (massively oversubscribed) killer event on How to Fundraise like a Pro. I shared insights on running a fundraising campaign, then @Laura Sisson, CFA led an awesome panel with GigPig co-founders Michael Forster and Kit Muir-Rogers on Resilient Raising, joined by their lead investor Chris Tottman from Notion Capital and Manchester Angels. This was a roller-coaster of a session (as was raising the round - and not just because I ran it!) with a lot of laughs! Always a pleasure to work with Elizabeth Scott MBE, Simon Thorpe, Naomi Timperley FRSA and team. P.S. Chris Tottman shares the most amazing braindumps on raising - follow him if you're not already doing so. The investor breakout sessions were 💥, and the feedback blew our minds! We're definitely doing it again! 🍽️ Thursday evening was the Manchester Angels spring dinner. 35 investors, 3 stellar pitches; 2 of which got everyone buzzing, and we're already gearing up to invest! 📸 Check out some pics, and huge thanks to Dan Rosenberg for snapping shots at the TIC event! 📸 #ManchesterStartups #Networking #InvestingOpportunities 🚀

I'm going to be in such trouble as we're already out of space...but hey ho! Tomorrow May 2nd Manchester Angels (moi), Cambridge Angels (Simon Thorpe) and Turing Innovation Catalyst Manchester (Elizabeth Scott MBE) are hosting an event quite unlike anything before. I am literally giving away my playbook - this is how the team at Glenluna Ventures raise money for startups (just closed 4th deal this year!). If that wasn't interesting enough, the amazing team at GigPig (Michael Forster Kit Muir-Rogers) will talk about the brutal realities of raising a round during an insanely tough market whilst still building something incredible. Resilient Raising will have the team joined by their lead investor and super legend Chris Tottman (Notion Capital, Included VC @venchateam) and compered by Laura Sisson, CFA from YFM Equity Partners. Finally - we're going to break out into a number of working sessions where investors such as Chris Tottman Simon Thorpe Laura Sisson, CFA as well as folk such as David Turner Elizabeth Scott MBE and myself will help tackle some of the issues attending are facing. There are 30 places people. No more and no less! We can't accept everyone so get in quick! 🗓️ When: May 2nd 2024 11am - 3pm. 📍 Where: Circle Square. ❓How: Details in comments. #Investment #venture #ManchesterTech #Investors #Founders #StartUp
