We provide free legal assistance to asylum seekers and refugees.
About us
We are a Leeds-based charity providing free legal representation to asylum seekers and refugees who cannot obtain legal aid. We also provide free immigration advice through our outreach service. Our passionate team of staff, volunteers and partner organisations is here to help those who come to the UK looking for safety but are let down by the immigration system. Our mission is to ensure that no one has to navigate the UK asylum system alone, and our vision is for all refugees and asylum seekers to get the legal support they need. We ensure that clients are matched with a qualified immigration lawyer to assist with their asylum claim and work with other organisations to build inclusive support systems.

We were pleased to assist Transform UK with their research at various stages over the last few years, supporting their design project for the Immigration and Asylum Tribunal service to improve the appeals experience for detained asylum seekers.
Asylum seekers and refugees made up around 11% of immigrants in the UK in 2023, but not all applications are successful and 33% of people were refused that same year. For some, especially those with limited English, the appeal process can be daunting, which is why Transform thought a redesign of the Immigration and Asylum Tribunal service was so important. For refugee week this week, we encourage you to read more about the goals and challenges we had with this project by checking out the case study: https://lnkd.in/esqjzRqb #RefugeeWeek

📣 The legal aid crisis is denying people access to justice. Last year, our casework team contributed to the research in Public Law Project and HARINGEY MIGRANT SUPPORT CENTRE’s ‘An Ocean of Unmet Need’ report evidencing the legal aid shortage in the immigration and asylum sector across England and Wales. We undertook a mapping exercise showing that in Leeds there was no asylum and immigration legal aid capacity and very limited capacity for free advice. PLP has used the evidence gathered to propose legal action against the Lord Chancellor for breaching his duty to ensure that legal aid is available. We are working in partnerships to develop a specific response to address some of the unmet need in and around Leeds, involving skilling up volunteers in giving legal advice. Thank you Public Law Project for continuing to highlight and tackle this important and urgent issue. Read the full report here 👉 https://t.ly/GaAsC Read the latest on the proposed legal challenge ⬇️
