Making maps and managing data to save lives in humanitarian crises
About us
MapAction enables 80+ expert geospatial and data professionals to donate their professional skills and expertise to humanitarian agencies of all sizes from the UN on down, including crisis response. The volunteer capability is reinforced by a small team of standby and permanent staff. Maps help everyone in an emergency response to mitigate a given humanitarian priority and take the best possible relief actions. This helps answer key questions in an earthquake or a cyclone, like: Which roads are blocked? What does the weather forecast look like? Where should shelters be established? For 20 years, in 140 emergency deployments and 80 countries - and hundreds more training events with partners worldwide - MapAction has provided disaster relief agencies, governments and grassroots organisations with maps, data-driven tools and solutions to ensure decisions about resources like food, water and housing are fairly and efficiently made. This helps save lives in any emergency response. A major CSO and a UN agency set up a shared data drive; a course on disaster risk reduction is steered towards anticipatory action; MapAction co-developed tools are used to update regional contingency plans by the national disaster management agency (BNGRC). These are some of the impacts from 18 months of work to strengthen anticipatory action programmes in the cyclone/drought-exposed island of #Madagascar. Watch the video to find out more. "We are looking at risk modelling and identifying risks locally, which until now has been mainly done at a national level. If a national government or local civil society organisation for instance is aware that a crisis could put certain communities and livelihoods at risk, it needs data to support investment in preventing it happening. So we work with many organisations to help them prepare for future disasters to build such models." Read #MapAction CEO Colin Rogers's piece on the future direction of MapAction in the RICS Land Journal. Prevention is Better Than Cure: Drones in Disaster Preparedness As South Africa Flying Labs(SAFL) in partnership with QP Drone Tech(QP), we are committed to providing our partners and clients with cutting-edge tools for Disaster Preparedness—because prevention is always better than cure. According to a 2023 study by University of the Witwatersrand and the University of Brighton, published in the South African Geographical Journal, the 2022 KwaZulu-Natal floods resulted in over 400 fatalities and caused more than R32.74 billion in damages. These disasters highlight the growing need for innovative technology in preparedness and risk reduction (Wits University). At QP Drone Tech, we work closely with partners such as WeRobotics, Esri, MapAction, Delta Scan, Cloudline, Integrated Aerial Systems and Regional Centre for Mapping of Resources for Development to deliver advanced drone solutions. Using drone technology, we create Digital Elevation Models (DEM) and aerial maps (orthomosaics) that enable us to: - Model water flows to predict flood-prone areas. - Identify hazards and risks for early intervention. - Locate safe evacuation zones and routes for disaster preparedness. - Develop mitigation plans and simulate emergency responses, improving overall readiness. By leveraging drones, AI, and GIS, we provide real-time data and actionable insights, helping authorities prevent disasters from escalating. Would you like to learn more about how South Africa Flying Labs (SAFL) and QP Drone Tech(QP) are advancing these solutions? Join us at the 3rd Drones in Disaster Risk Management Conference, where industry experts discuss how drones, AI, and GIS are revolutionizing disaster preparedness in South Africa. 📅 Register now (www.drmconference.com) to be part of the conversation on how drones are safeguarding our communities and environment. #DisasterPreparedness #DronesInSA #AI #GIS #DisasterRiskManagement #DroneTechnology #TechForGood #WeRobotics #Esri #MapAction #RCMRD #Cloudline #IAS #Deltascan

"Sessions displayed areas of the neighbourhoods that were at risk of flooding, which are not currently recognised in official flood risk maps. Due to this omission, these communities are not supported by flood risk interventions and mitigation strategies. Putting at-risk people and places on the map is crucial to disaster preparedness because without identifying the problems, effective responses to flood events are impossible." Ambreen Masud, a PhD student in geospatial systems at Newcastle University, presents her findings from #Colombia based on workshops with local at-risk communities in three urban neighbourhoods that are 'off the flood map' in Cartagena. The research was supported by MapAction. #disasterpreparedness #urbandata 👇 Read the full blog post below. https://lnkd.in/eQujX5wC

This year, MapAction completed the 18th edition of #MapEx, our annual disaster simulation response exercise for MapAction's humanitarian geospatial and data volunteers, as well as staff, operational partners, international institutional observers and stakeholders. The annual simulation reinforces preparedness, strengthens sharing of best practices and innovation and facilitates global humanitarian data networks. The MapEx event continues to scale year-on-year: this year, for the first time, MapEx featured #anticipatoryaction components. Thanks to the British Cartographic Society for the in-depth feature on MapEx2024 in the current edition of #Maplines magazine (available here: https://lnkd.in/dt4g_Cna). Great to see MapAction's CEO Colin Rogers featured in this profile of Sussex University alumni who work in the Humanitarian sphere. #worldhumanitarianday
Ever wondered what it takes to do life-saving work helping people hit by disasters and conflict? This World Humanitarian Day we asked alumni from Sussex and the Institute of Development Studies to share their advice for students considering a humanitarian career. Hear what they said and find out what they studied: https://ow.ly/vrCi50T19oR Thanks to all of our contributors: * Abigail Noko, Amit Choubey, Annah Macharia, Arianna Calza Bini, Beryl Lo, Colin Rogers, Deepti Ameta, James Belgrave, Jodie Le Marrec, Martin Griffiths United Nations OCHA, Nova Fransisca Silitonga, Sudarshan S, Tunde Alabi-Hundeyin, PhD.
