🌊 Evolving Fair Trade USA's Capture Fisheries Standard 🌏Client/Collaborators: Fairtrade USA 📍 Location: USA 📅 Year: 2021 🔄 Project: Revised Capture Fisheries Standard 🐟 Enhancing Sustainable Fishing Practices: Launched in 2014, the Fair Trade USA Capture Fisheries Standard aimed to set requirements and compliance criteria for global wild-caught fisheries. It strives to nurture resilient fishing communities and promote ocean health, offering fishers the opportunity to embrace fair trade principles and commercialize their products. Particularly crucial for small-scale fisheries in developing nations, often challenged to access well-known certifications like the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC). 🌍 A Major 2020 Revision: Following minor updates in 2017, 2020 marked a significant revision period. The objective was to ensure the Fair Trade program's consistency and clarity, aligning it with the evolving sustainability landscape in the fisheries sector. 🤝 A Collaborative Journey: The MarFishEco team spearheaded a transparent and thorough review and revision process. Extensive outreach and consultation with stakeholders ranging from producers and brand partners to academics and NGOs shaped the Draft CFS. Insights from five years of on-field implementation and interviews worldwide formed the foundation for the revised version. ✅ Key Improvements in CFS 2.0.0: The Revised CFS 2.0.0 enhances original requirements, with a focus on delivering greater benefits to Fair Trade producers and streamlining value and efficiency across the supply chain. After a public comment period, this version replaced CFS 1.1.0, becoming operational in January 2022. 🌐 Closing the Social Sustainability Gap: MarFishEco's role in this process results in an impactful and clear CFS, making sustainable fisheries and seafood certifications accessible to small-scale fisheries in developing nations. This endeavor aims to bridge the social sustainability gap often prevalent in these regions and aligns with the evolving needs and expectations of all stakeholders. 🌍 Practices in the FMFO Industry 🐟🌱 🤝 Client/Collaborators: MarFishEco, NEF Consulting Limited, Compassion in World Farming 📆 Year: 2020 📍 Location: Global 📊 Project: Fact Sheet on the EU’s FMFO Trade for Compassion in World Farming In 2020, MarFishEco collaborated with NEF Consulting to do a study for Compassion in World Farming (CIWF). The study focused on dissecting policy levers influencing the fishmeal and fish oil (FMFO) industry in EU operations, including capture, direct sourcing, and intermediate product sourcing. The findings served as a pivotal advocacy tool for CIWF, shedding light on opportunities for future, in-depth research and policy adjustments. 🎯 Objectives of the Study: *Formal classification of forage fish routes into the EU market for FMFO. *Statistical overview of tonnage, fish species, and country of origin for each FMFO route. *Descriptive list of EU policies regulating FMFO market entry and production conditions. *Exploration of EU-West African trade agreements related to FMFO issues. *Balanced analysis of FMFO pros and cons. 📧 For more details or to access the full report, reach out to MarFishEco at projects@marfisheco.com. Another incredibly useful “digestion” from Francisco Blaha. For anyone working in EU fisheries, seafood imports, retail or IUU - this one is worth a read (and it will save you a lot of time trying to understand what is generally a tough subject to navigate). Note. Francisco highlights “While the changes are effective from 10 January 2026, “old” catch certificates and documents (those created and validated before 10 January 2026) will be admissible for an additional 24 months from the date of application (if submitted through CATCH).”… …But that’s not necessarily a lot of time depending who you are and how difficult change in your organisation may be. #iuu #fisheries #seafood #trade #transparency
Having worked my way from crew to fisheries scientist, I have 40 years of expertise in the global fisheries compliance. International groups, governments, and businesses currently employ me in senior consulting roles.
Central to the effectiveness of the EU IUU regulation is the Catch Certificate (CC), a document not easy to handle, so here I will try to “reverse engineer” the ways each section is being handled by the different countries I work with and the CA in the MS that receive them, to clarify its use and changes. https://lnkd.in/gwNhtqh3

🔍 Commissioned by Planet Tracker, MFE has developed a theoretical framework to evaluate the suitability of marine fisheries for participation in blue recovery bond programs. 📈 The demand for seafood is on the rise, placing immense pressure on fish stocks and pushing many towards unsustainability. Traditional fisheries management has often fallen short in sustaining viable stocks or recovering depleted ones. 💡 Blue recovery bonds offer a solution by promoting the recovery and long-term sustainability of marine fish stocks through incentive-based resource management. 🌍 MFE evaluated 295 fisheries worldwide using the developed framework and the FishSource global dataset. The results identified 65 strong blue recovery bond candidates, primarily in the North Atlantic, North Pacific, and South Pacific Oceans. 🔎 This work provided a robust initial understanding of how to assess fisheries for blue recovery bond candidacy. It underscored the importance of specific data and information streams in advancing efforts for fisheries recovery. 📧 For more insights or to access the full report, please contact MarFishEco at projects@marfisheco.com or view this project on our website here: https://lnkd.in/eMMwXfr9 François Mosnier, Planet Tracker, Jordan DiNardo, PhD #FisheriesManagement #Sustainability #BlueRecoveryBonds #MarineConservation #Innovation #MFE #MarFishEco #FisheriesConsultants #PlanetTracker

🚨 Project Announcement 🚨 🌊 Proud to announce our collaboration with The Coalition for Fisheries Transparency on the Global Charter for Fisheries Transparency! 🌍🐟 📍 Location: Global 📅 Year: 2024 MFE was commissioned by Oceana, as part of the Coalition for Fisheries Transparency*, to delve into the Charter's 10 transparency principles. This work involved providing detailed support for each principle using scientific literature and global case studies on fisheries transparency and IUU (Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated) fishing. Our Contributions: 1.Elaboration of Principles: Detailed explanations and support for the Charter’s 10 transparency principles. 2.User Guide Creation: Recommendations for promoting fisheries transparency, with specific guidance on achieving each principle, including special considerations for small-scale fisheries. 3. Explanatory Pitch Deck: A resource for Coalition partners to use in outreach efforts to governments globally, showcasing the importance of adopting the principles. The ten principles of the Charter aim to ensure seafood is free from IUU fishing practices and human rights abuses by making vessel and fishing activity information widely available. These principles are designed to support one another, promoting true transparency across global fishery supply chains. *The Coalition for Fisheries Transparency is an international community of NGOs committed to improving transparency and accountability in fisheries worldwide. By sharing intelligence, resources, and strategies, the Coalition maximizes its impact and fosters a strong community among transparency leaders. Whilst the subject matter is worrying, it is great that there is now becoming a real consistent momentum in mainstream media about abuses in global seafood supply chains. Much of this push has been from Ian Urbina and team.
