We read today a great, long article in the Financial Times on the UK’s creative sector, and its vital role in stimulating growth of the UK economy.  The FT reminds us that the creative sector in the UK employs around 2.3m people. It’s worth £125bn. The UK leads the world in film and TV, in fashion, the arts, gaming and music. Can the government help make it a sector we are proud of, recognising our world-leading talent?  For Film and TV, there is rising competition from rival nations in the UK and Asia. South Korea is taking the world by storm, and investing in its future. The UK needs to keep up, to invest in modern studio space and technology.  The Marlow Film Studios intends to be part of this growth strategy, bringing jobs and investments to Bucks, and building a future for our new generation.  If you have an FT subscription you can read the full article here:

Marlow Film Studios confirms that it intends to submit an appeal to the Planning Inspectorate, in response to the decision by the Buckinghamshire Council Strategic Sites Committee decision to turn down its application in May this year. The Statement of Case appeal submission will include a request for a public inquiry. It will be for the Planning Inspectorate to determine its timetable and location.  In spite of the Council's decision to refuse our application, we remain confident of the strength of our case, and of the benefits that our investment will bring to the local community and the wider national economy. The proposed Marlow Film Studios will provide 4,000 jobs, including 2,000 to the local economy. It will provide a boost of £3.2BN in growth investment in the local area over the first decade. This will represent a major growth investment in jobs and skills for Buckinghamshire and for the UK. It will greatly strengthen the UK's position in the film and TV sector, where the UK is already a global player. Support for the creative sector in the UK, as a uniquely successful part of the UK's economic infrastructure, crosses political divides.    We will be investing in vital local traffic infrastructure and sustainable public transport and will provide significant improvements to the local community. The studio campus will provide the British film industry and international production companies with the highest quality of advanced, tailor-made facilities that they are now demanding, helping keep the UK in the forefront of global competition. We believe that our proposed campus and the landscaped area around it have been designed to an exemplary standard. The investment presents a significant opportunity to utilise and substantially improve a despoiled former landfill site, making good use of a site that is presently unusable for domestic buildings or agriculture. Our hope is to build an institution of global standing for the British film industry that Marlow will be proud of.

We are incredibly grateful to everyone who came to support Marlow Film Studios at the Strategic Sites Committee at Buckinghamshire Council today. Speaking after the committee meeting Robert Laycock, CEO of Marlow Film Studios, said: "Despite many members on the committee crediting the quality of the application, and acknowledging the very significant social and economic benefits it would bring to Buckinghamshire, we are disappointed the committee was not able to support this extraordinary proposal. It is one of the most significant investment opportunities in the future of Buckinghamshire and its residents, and we are now considering the next steps for the development. In addition to luminaries like James Cameron, Andy Serkis, Paul Greengrass, Richard Curtis, Jeremy Irons and a host of global figures who support us, we are most touched by the unprecedented level of local support from Buckinghamshire. Over 5,200 people wrote letters of support, and well over 100 people turned up in person to the meeting today to show councillors how much they care.”

WilkinsonEyre's Director, Oliver Tyler, has authored an op-ed titled, "The Future of the UK’s Film Industry Relies on Considered Design," for BE News. “It’s clear that UK studio space is being recognised as an increasingly valuable asset for investors and developers, but with the extensive industry requirements and complexity of the day-to-day delivery of productions, flexible and sensitive design is essential. Timely investment of the type used to fund the Marlow Film Studios - at the right scale in the right place – will complement other developments across the UK and ensure the continued upward trajectory of this creative sector.” Click here to read the full article https://bit.ly/3QwZWIk #wilkinsoneyre #britishfilm #marlowfilmstudios

We caught up with our Chief Executive, Jeremy Hay, this week who has been looking at the plans for the proposed Marlow Film Studios. He had this to say: "As a charity focused on opportunities for autistic people and individuals with learning disabilities it's clear, having spoken to Marlow Film Studios, what a positive addition this would be for the county, in particular because of the job opportunities it would bring to the area. "The recently published Buckland Review of Autism Employment, highlighted that only around 30% of autistic people are employed. This studio, would provide 2,000 new creative and high technology jobs and a further 2,000 new jobs in support roles for local businesses. They would provide a range of roles that, without a doubt, would suit the skill set of the young people we work with. As such, we are fully supportive of this proposal. We hope people really embrace this chance we have." If you would like to, you can show your support for the proposed Marlow Film studios here: https://lnkd.in/e2x58mfZ

🎬Marlow Studios is a £750M investment for Bucks, transforming a former landfill site on the border of Marlow into a modern and beautiful campus.  🎞️The Studios will bring at least 4000 jobs, 2000 of them in film, TV and other areas, and 2000 in local businesses.   ➡️We are partnering with our local schools and colleges to provide training opportunities for our young people, passionate about Film and TV as a career. Our aim is to create jobs for young people right here in Bucks so that they stay in Bucks.  Bucks Council plans to make a decision on this in May. What Bucks people think of our proposal matters. People have the chance to write in to the Council - and so far the great majority of those who have done so support us.  You have a chance to make an impact on the decision.
