What a great way to kick off March! We had the first in a series of STEM outreach activities which our STEM Ambassadors at MNP are taking part in throughout the year. On Tuesday, Rowena Neighbour led the GoConstruct K’Nex Challenge at a local school. The challenge aims to introduce children to the world of engineering by bringing it alive with a practical design and build task using K’Nex. After presenting their creations, a winner is chosen from each class to be put forward to the regional final. Rowena has been leading this event for several years and, once again, she was incredibly impressed by the creativity, teamwork and problem solving skills on display. The energy and enthusiasm from the children was contagious – who knows, maybe it sparked a future passion for engineering in some of them! Looking forward to more inspiring STEM outreach events throughout the year!

Consulting Civil and Structural Engineers
About us
MNP was founded in 1999 by David Mason, Frank Navarro and Stuart Pledge. We are a privately owned, independent consultancy that employs over 50 civil and structural engineers and technicians in Hitchin, London and Manchester. We are involved in projects which vary in scale from under £1m to over £250m. These range from new commercial, retail and residential projects to the intricate modification and preservation of existing structures, which requires a highly forensic approach. We are a proactive partner on every project helping architects, developers and investors do more with their buildings. We identify opportunities and craft solutions, carefully balancing creative and commercial needs. At every stage, we contribute our expertise and ideas in a way that’s clear and precise, and our open, approachable culture is fundamental to how we work.

Fantastic to see Westminster Fire Station has been shortlisted for the RIBA London Awards 2025! We carried out the structural and civil engineering design for this project, which involved the refurbishment of the decommissioned Grade II listed fire station, along with the construction of a new residential building to the rear. The winning projects will be announced in Spring - good luck to all involved!
We are pleased to announce, Westminster Fire Station has been shortlisted in the RIBA London Awards 2025! Thank you to the entire team and to our supportive clients and consultants. Westminster Fire Station is an unusual development which has resulted in the preservation of one of London’s most iconic Grade II Listed fire stations, along with the creation of a sensitive and textured contemporary apartment building. The existing building was refurbished to create a restaurant and housing, which, together with the new building, define a landscaped garden courtyard. The residential development was created for Far East Orchard Limited, an international developer, and Alchemi Group, a London-based development manager. Openstudio Architects led the design team, supported by structural engineers Mason Navarro Pledge Ltd, services engineers Mecserve, landscape architect James Lee, and interior designer Studio L, London. Project management was by IKON Consulting. Turley provided planning consultancy, with Richard Brookes on Heritage and Rory McManus on planning, assisted by Fiona Flaherty. The materials of the existing fire station were used to develop textures in the new building. Pale bricks and iridescent glazed bricks reference the Portland stone of the fire station's base and the glazed bricks on the interior, while the horizontal coursing echoes nineteenth century brick buildings in Victoria. The iridescent bricks trace the lines of the existing cantilevered walkways, weaving old and new together, while vertical brickwork aligns with the fire station’s railings. As the building increases in height, the iridescent bricks increase in number, causing the facade to shimmer and change with changing light conditions. This has led neighbours to christen the building ‘The Golden Citadel.’ The unglazed bricks were supplied by Petersen Tegl A/S and the iridescent glazed bricks by Koninklijke Tichelaar B.V. Makkum, with mortar by Lime Green Products Openstudio team on the Fire Station: Jennifer Beningfield, Carina Kramer, Sasha Sattar-Lothore, Beth Stevens, Jayson Young, Faya Tyagay Photography by Richard Davies and N I C K R O C H O W S K I

Approximately 3 years ago I started work, with many others, on an endeavour that would attempt to address a fundamental question that has been posed to those who work as structural engineering professionals within the built-environment industry. That question being; 'are you competent?'. Specifically, are you sufficiently competent to be involved with the design, construction, operation, maintenance, modification, and demolition of a higher-risk building? The outcome of this task has now borne fruit, in the form of the HRB Competency Register for Structural Engineers has now begun taking applications, for more details on this please follow the link below: https://lnkd.in/e_XCX_CU At the time of writing this post, I received written confirmation from the Engineering Council yesterday that I have been placed within the HRB Competency Register for Chartered Structural Engineers. This is a significant milestone as this recognition of competence was done so with the tireless help of the staff of The Institution of Structural Engineers and the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) as well as David Cormie and John Carpenter CEng, FICE, with whom I worked on the original competency objectives for structural engineers in early 2022. Finally I would also offer my sincere thanks to my colleagues at Mason Navarro Pledge Ltd for their unwavering support for making this happen.

It’s now 16 months since the fire destroyed the car park at London Luton Airport. In that time we’ve built a new drop off zone with major infrastructure upgrades, demolished the building, rebuilt a foundation system, laid drainage capable of storing 160,000 litres of sprinkler discharge, built 2 cores with 2 more in progress and now the steel frame is flying up. The first bay of 10 up in a few weeks. It is a vast site and highly constrained. A huge team effort from some amazing professionals. We’re delighted to be working on the refurbishment of the Kensington Forum Hotel, a 30-storey building with double storey basement. The redevelopment will upgrade the hotel to 4-star status and consists of a complete refurbishment of all hotel rooms, replacement of the existing glazed façade, re-purposing of front of house areas, the addition of spa, gym and swimming pool facilities within the basement, and a two-storey extension to roof level. Structural works include major alterations and strengthening to the primary core structure and transfer slabs as well as various cut and carve of the structure. The project is scheduled for completion in 2027. These fantastic visuals have been taken from our structural model, created by Brett Hobbs.
