Book and Periodical Publishing
A destination for interior designers & architects exploring a wealth of materials and products.
About us
Material Source is a destination - both online, and offline at our Studios in Manchester & Glasgow - for architects, designers and property professionals, exploring a wealth of materials, products and interiors to inspire your next projects. From wood, glass, ceramic and concrete to vinyl, paint, textiles and recycled materials, we showcase new products from emerging and established designers and manufacturers around the world, share the latest interiors in retail, hospitality, residential and commercial, and we take a closer look at the people and practices who use these materials every day. Answering to a growing appetite to discover how things are made, we look at how specifiers and makers choose materials, the challenges they face and the thought process behind specifying for their projects or products. Launched in April 2018, our aim is simple – to inspire and inform as well as celebrate the importance of the materials that bring products and interiors to life, especially ones with outstanding environmental content.

Covering our first seminar of 2025 at Material Source Studio Manchester, our article asking: 'How will materiality help us hit Net Zero?' is now live: https://ow.ly/jl2w50USk05 It’s reported that roughly 40% of carbon emissions come from the construction, operation, or maintenance of buildings - putting built environment professionals in a powerful position to instigate change. Placing this at the centre of our discussion, we invited two panellists with a wealth of experience in their respective fields to offer their views on how change can be made. John Whittaker CEng, MiMMM, engineering director at Graphene Engineering Innovation Centre at The University of Manchester, and David Leversha CEng MIStructE Mst(Cantab) MEng, director & net zero carbon lead, WSP, joined the conversation with host, David Smalley, director, Material Source, covering topics from the importance of embracing innovation to support the new UK Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard, to the challenges facing architects and designers, and potential paths forward as an industry collective. A huge thank you to our panellists for their insight shared, to all our guests, and to our supporters for the evening, Crown Paints, Forbo Flooring Systems, Vepa UK Ltd – all Partners at Material Source Studio. Shout-outs are included for: Robert Hopkins, director & head of sustainability, AHR, Owen Tracey, senior architect, BakerHicks, Jasper Sanders FRSA, founder, Jasper Sanders + Partners, Alexander Esfahani, senior architect, Chapman Taylor; Jack Poulton, project architect & PassivHaus designer, SimpsonHaugh; Climate Action Student led Group at the Manchester School of Architecture (MSA); Greencore Homes; Knight Frank; PwC; Better Buildings Partnership; BRE; The Carbon Trust; CIBSE; LETI; RIBA; RICS; IStructE London YMG; and UK Green Building Council (UKGBC) - within the piece, with links to additional resources. Once you've read through, we'd love to know your thoughts on the themes discussed. Let us know your views! The conversation continues at next week's GLA Seminar on 11 Feb. 📸 Tim Ainsworth #sustainability #carbon #NZCBS #builtenvironment #architecture #design #innovation

For this week's interview, we caught up with our Studio neighbour, Patrick Thomas, founder & creative director, Up North Architects. Having completed the highly anticipated, and subsequently, well-received bar, restaurant, and social workspace Junction at Manchester Central, Manchester Central, which features products from a wealth of Material Source Studio Partners, we were keen to catch up with Patrick to find out the details behind what is the practice’s largest project to-date. In our chat, we also consider which venues have succeeded in offering the required vibe-shift desired by guests post-Covid, discuss the importance of lighting, and take the opportunity to go back to the very start to discover how Up North Architects originally came to be. Innovative demonstrator project, Clearfell House is an experimental timber structure that facilitates community engagement with British woodland. Developed as part of Central Saint Martins, University of The Arts London’s ‘Regenerative Construction’ unit on the M-Arch Architecture Course, a group of 33 students investigated the production and application of bio-based materials, forming Clearfell House. This project was led by research and design practice, Material Cultures - who focus on the bio-regionality of materials and low embodied carbon construction. It was a full-house at our Manchester Studio last night for our first Seminar of 2025, which asked: How will materiality help us hit Net Zero? A huge thank you to everyone who joined us. Panellists John Whittaker CEng, MiMMM, engineering director, Graphene Engineering Innovation Centre at The University of Manchester, and David Leversha CEng MIStructE Mst(Cantab) MEng, director & net zero carbon lead, WSP, discussed with host, David Smalley, director, Material Source, the importance of embracing innovation to support the new UK Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard. Insight from the audience flagged the challenges, from cost to insurance. And potential paths forward were suggested to make strides as an industry collective. Key takeaways included: ➡️ UK Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard is an exciting prospect - helping all sector segments pull together in the same direction - a view shared by Robert Hopkins, director & head of sustainability, AHR ➡️ The challenge lies in the rate of decarbonisation for existing materials being slower than is required to meet the targets set out in the Standard - innovation is needed, says David Leversha ➡️ Graphene is amongst the new materials that could support this lower carbon future, alongside hemp, timber, and the reuse of steel, commented John Whittaker ➡️ Case study data is suggesting cost neutrality on large-scale projects for incorporating more sustainable options, debunking common views ➡️ Perhaps more than anything, cross party support is required - full collaboration, with a macro to micro approach, as shared by Alexander Esfahani, senior architect & head of sustainability, Chapman Taylor Stay tuned for the full write-up on Material Source Online in the coming days: https://lnkd.in/egWT6nvb. In the meantime, thanks once again to all our guests, our panel, and to our supporters for this event, Crown Paints, Forbo Flooring Systems & Vepa UK Ltd - all Partners at Material Source Studio. 📸 Tim Ainsworth #carbon #netzero #NZCBS

"We wanted to create a workplace that makes people feel something – a connection to this city, this culture, and the work they do here. "This isn’t a cookie-cutter office; it’s a celebration of identity and purpose." This comment from Pallavi Dean, founder and creative director at Roar, explains the team's approach to the new Dubai office of a Global Management Consulting Firm, which boldly reimagines the modern workplace by immersing it in the UAE’s rich landscapes and cultural heritage.
