We've got something a little bit different for you next month 🐠 . During the Easter holidays on 11 April, Beach Guardian - a Cornwall-based organiser of community beach cleans, and conductor of educational workshops - will join us in partnership with Milliken Floors Europe to run two fun, interactive craft sessions for architects, designers and your little ones at our Manchester Studio. What some consider trash can be treasure for others. And with that in mind, in this 30-minute workshop, Andrew Whittle of Beach Guardian supports children aged 4-12 (and their parents), to create their very own woven fish, using would-be waste material found on our shorelines 🌊. Spend some quality time learning about caring for our oceans while creating a unique craft to take home. If you're an architect, interior designer, or property professional, email manchester_info@materialsource.co.uk to find out more and secure your spaces. Places are extremely limited, so please get in touch as soon as you can. We're excited to welcome you. #Events #Manchester #Easter #Family
Material Source
Book and Periodical Publishing
A destination for interior designers & architects exploring a wealth of materials and products.
About us
Material Source is a destination - both online, and offline at our Studios in Manchester & Glasgow - for architects, designers and property professionals, exploring a wealth of materials, products and interiors to inspire your next projects. From wood, glass, ceramic and concrete to vinyl, paint, textiles and recycled materials, we showcase new products from emerging and established designers and manufacturers around the world, share the latest interiors in retail, hospitality, residential and commercial, and we take a closer look at the people and practices who use these materials every day. Answering to a growing appetite to discover how things are made, we look at how specifiers and makers choose materials, the challenges they face and the thought process behind specifying for their projects or products. Launched in April 2018, our aim is simple – to inspire and inform as well as celebrate the importance of the materials that bring products and interiors to life, especially ones with outstanding environmental content.

Did you watch series 8 of The Great Pottery Throwdown? If you did, you will have spotted ceramic artist, Steve Brown on your screen. Turning out impressive makes such as a monstrous hell mouth fire place, dustmite encrusted raku pots, and for the series’ final, a Phonotrope animation inspired amphora, Steve week-on-week shared with the nation his natural flare for all things clay. This experience - he says - has accelerated his own pottery practice, which he now pursues full time. In this exclusive interview, we chat to Steve about his creative career to-date - spanning animation and clay. Give it a read, here: https://ow.ly/YlFf50Vh7si 📸 Credits: Top/BR - Patch Dolan / BL - Steve Brown #Pottery #Ceramics #GreatPotteryThrowdown #Craft #Making

If you grew up anywhere in the vicinity of Manchester, you'll be familiar with the Rylands - Manchester Building. Located in the heart of Market Street - the city's main shopping thoroughfare - the 1930's Grade II listed building, a former textile warehouse, has been a fixture of the 'Piccadilly end of town' for all who've visited, including ourselves, knowing it best for its retailer tenant at the time, Debenhams. Since 2021, this monolithic icon has been unoccupied, taking up valuable space in a prime area of Manchester City Centre. And so when the scaffolding went up last year to symbolise large-scale transformation, it was met with a warm welcome and high anticipation for what's to come. Amongst those excited are us, our Manchester Studio being just a short walk away. And so when Andrew Morris, senior architect, JB+CO invited us for a site tour with Jamie Cox, design manager, Domis Construction, we grabbed our hardhat and headed across. We also chatted with Michael Cunniff, associate director, at Jeffrey Bell Architects, to get a full picture of the project from inception. Here, in an exclusive first-look, we share the progress on the renovation of the Rylands Building, from top to bottom ➡️ https://ow.ly/t7Q250Vh6XQ Huge thanks to Jeffrey Bell Architects and Domis for their time in sharing the project's journey so far. Our Manchester Studio was full to the brim for another packed seminar session this evening. Posing the question: 'Designing for EDI: How does design empower people?' our stellar panellists Stephanie Kyle, Associate & Inclusive Design Consultant at Floyd Slaski Architects Ltd, Neurodiversity Specialist and AJ100 Changemaker of the Year & Andrew Bissell, Partner - Lighting Design at Ridge and Partners LLP, and Past President of the SLL - Society of Light and Lighting, joined David Smalley, Director, Material Source on stage to discuss what makes a truly equitable, accessible and inclusive space. Some of the key takeaways included: ➡️ Keep in mind the 3 Cs (calm, clarity & control) ➡️ Make it simple for people to flex their environment ➡️ Belonging is increasingly appearing as part of the EDI discussion - the term has evolved to DEIB ➡️ Assumptions are the enemy of inclusive design - end user engagement - not to be confused with client engagement - is key ➡️ There are 900 non visible disabilities - everyone has unique wants and needs, and they're not always visible ➡️ Every space or scheme should be considered as a standalone project - copy and pasting doesn't promote EDI ➡️ Arm yourself with the information to ask the right questions - and bring in specialists - "know what you don't know". As well as a raft of insightful questions and thoughts from the audience, the conversation brought about much for consideration. Stay tuned for the full write-up online at materialsource.co.uk next week (with plenty of links to the resources mentioned). And in the meantime, a huge thanks to all who joined us, to our panellists, and to our supporters for this event, Forbo Flooring Systems, Saint-Gobain Ecophon UK and Ireland, lumenear uk ltd - all Partners at Material Source Studio. 📸 Tim Ainsworth #EDI #neurodiversity #event #seminar #materialsourcestudio #design
