We're excited to feature in The Washington Post's big new piece on the future of concrete - the 2nd most used material on Earth (after water). The piece captures the challenges and opportunities in the industry, highlights our proprietary alkali fusion process, and features some great shots of our R&D team (who the Washington Post calls "very focused bunnies"). If someone had told Unreasonable Fellow Elizabeth Gilligan years ago that she’d be running a cement company, she probably would have laughed. But one experiment led to another, first in a converted garage, then with machines bought off eBay, until she found herself at the helm of Material Evolution, leading a breakthrough in ultra-low carbon cement. Liz is tackling one of the world’s biggest environmental problems: cement production, a major contributor to global emissions. Using AI-driven alkali-fusion technology, her company has developed a process that cuts carbon by up to 85% without sacrificing strength or performance. In just five years, they’ve scaled from grams of material to an 18-ton-an-hour production facility, securing major investment and industry recognition along the way. Liz has been selected to join the Unreasonable Impact UK & Europe 2025 cohort, a collaboration between Unreasonable and Barclays dedicated to scaling businesses that merge profit and impact. Through this programme, Material Evolution will gain access to world-class mentorship, resources, and a powerful global network to accelerate its growth and maximise its impact. We need to look harder at cement’s climate impact. 🏗️🌍 Chances are, you’re less than a few metres away from something made with cement, it’s one of the most ubiquitous resources after water. And while the industry plays a crucial role in the UK's economic and infrastructure growth, it is responsible for 1.5% of the nation's emissions, and we’re going to need a lot more of it if the government is going to get building. In our latest blog, Amira Jamal, policy analyst breaks down the four headline reasons why we should care more about the industry. And in our latest briefing, we detail projections of how to reduce emissions from the cement industry and recommend how the government can pave the way through constructive policies in their upcoming industrial strategy and beyond. With #InternationalWomensDay just around the corner, we’re shining a spotlight on the powerhouse women at Material Evolution who are pushing the boundaries of sustainability head-on. 💡 Did you know that women make up just 15% of the UK construction workforce? At Material Evolution, we’re proud to defy these statistics, leading the way in addressing barriers for women in a traditionally male-dominated industry. From breaking new ground in ultra-low carbon cement technology to leading the way in transforming waste into opportunity, our women-led team is rewriting the playbook of what’s possible in the concrete industry and beyond. This International Women’s Day and every day, we celebrate their vision, ingenuity and relentless pursuit of progress. #AccelerateAction #WomenInLeadership #WomenInConstruction #WomenInSTEM #ConstructionInnovation
