In a recent panel at the CogX Global Leadership Summit, Edward Achtner, head of generative AI at HSBC highlighted that much of the excitement around AI in the financial sector is more “success theater” than reality. He emphasized that while many financial firms promote their AI capabilities, meaningful results are often lacking. Achtner pointed out the need for a more strategic approach to deploying AI and managing its risks, particularly with newer technologies like generative AI. Despite the hype, many institutions are still struggling to effectively harness AI’s full potential in a way that delivers tangible outcomes. Lat week we hosted the second meeting of the Data Impact Leadership Forum in London, where we focused the discussion on AI Readiness: Delivering Business Value through People Data and Skills. It was a fascinating discussion with Data Leaders from a range of sectors in attendance. The message was clear - Data & Talent are both going to be essential to go beyond the Hype delivering real business value in AI It was great to have a real mix of diversity of sectors and skills in the room - we had a great blend of organsational leaders, consultants, and innovators in Data & AI. This is going to make for a real solid foundation for sharing experience, knowledge and skills to support members in achieving their goals and tackling challenges moving forwards. -The session was focused on AI Readiness: Delivering business value through data, people & culture with top keynotes from Chris Catchpole, Chief Data & Analytics Officer at Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water and Heather Wade, Head of Data Transformation at Johnson Matthey. The scene was set by these two - there is a lot of hype around AI, this can certainly be leveraged to achieve business objectives but we there is a lot of work still to be done - with tech & talent. Once you cut through all of the noise, it seems that the AI Hype Cycle is ahead of the foundations actually needed to deliver real impact. On the Talent front - data teams are evolving and the right blend of existing and new talent must be achieved to ensure successful adoption and deployment of AI. A focus on creating the right data and AI culture is also going to be critical It was been great to to develop this forum with Ian Davey at FinTech-Tables always good to work with him.
