Organisations that tend to their greenhouse see improved staff retention, increased innovation and creativity and enhanced productivity. The term Greenhouse Engineering coined by the late Tony Hsieh CEO of Zappos is a concept that advocates focusing on environment that teams operate in to optimise performance. Tony focused a lot on creating serendipitous collisions across this team but theres a lot that goes into a good environment, Here's 5 common things you can focus on in your organisation. - Psychological Safety When open and honest communication is the norm, team members feel comfortable challenging the status quo and mistakes are treated as learning opportunities rather than failures - Building a culture of collaboration A shared understanding and respect for different roles and perspectives. Conflict is approached constructively, focusing on ideas rather than personalities, Meetings are balanced with contributions from everyone and actions are proactively taken by appropriate members of the group. - Tools and resources Team members have access to up-to-date product focused technology and tools (Hardware, software and platforms). There is a culture of meaningful continuous learning and professional development. Mentorship and coaching are readily available, this can be internal and external - Open Communication, (clear goals and good feedback) Feedback is frequent, clear, and constructive. Sometimes it feels hard to give and receive. Team members feel comfortable speaking up and voicing concerns. There is a mutual commitment to personal and professional growth. 1 to 1s are focused around meaningful progress and not personal judgement of others - Reflection and improvement There is regular opportunity to reflect, debate and improve together, its important that where appropriate actions are taken and the progress shared with the team.
