  • Tears of joy were shed when an elderly inpatient was reunited with her husband ahead of her birthday thanks to our kind-hearted staff. Elizabeth Ross was admitted to Harvey Ward on Saturday 14 September with a broken hip following a fall at her home. During a chat with ward Matron Penny Horton, Elizabeth revealed her 96th birthday was coming up and that she was sad that she wouldn’t get to spend it with her husband John, who she is the sole carer of, as he is currently staying in an assessment centre while she is in hospital. It is the longest time the couple have spent apart since they married on 17 August 1949. In the hope of putting a smile on Elizabeth’s face, Penny and Acting Ward Manager Sarah Burton arranged for John, aged 97, to be brought in to the hospital so he could join her for a surprise birthday tea party that they had arranged and held in the ward’s day room on Wednesday (2 October). • Thanks to the generosity of 15 donors and their families, 39 patients were able to receive transplants facilitated by the Trust between 1 April 2023 to 31 March 2024. In the same period, there were 69 tissue donation referrals leading to 13 tissue donations to patients. With the law changing around organ donation, it is important to remember that it is assumed that when someone dies in the circumstances where they could be a donor, that they agree to donate if they haven’t officially opted out. However, no-one is automatically added to the Organ Donor Register. You still need to confirm your decision and your family will be consulted before donation goes ahead. It takes just two minutes to confirm your organ donation decision by visiting the Organ Donation website. You can also record or amend your organ donation decision in the following ways: • On the NHS App in England • By calling 0300 123 23 23. #OrganDonationWeek
