A big thanks to all those who attended my Victor Phillips Memorial lecture on the Penryn Campus last night, where I spoke of my life in mineral processing, which began 55 years ago this month. It was good to see so many CSM students present. A special thanks to the Cornish Institute of Engineers for organising and for the splendid buffet afterwards. Congratulations to our #ProcessMineralogy24 consultant Prof Megan Becker on her inaugural lecture at the University of Cape Town Megan has been working with us on our Process Mineralogy series of events since 2010 and we're honoured to have her as part of the team 👏 ⭐
Professor in the Centre for Minerals Research, Department of Chemical Engineering, University of Cape Town
After having had the honour to present my inaugural lecture at UCT on the 22nd October 2024, I’ve found that the experience is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on (i) the importance of mineralogy in the pursuit of sustainability, and (ii) how fortunate I’ve been to have had so many wonderful collaborators, mentors and students in the course of my career. Our low-carbon futures require investment in renewable energy technology. This in turn requires unprecedented amounts of metals. Mining virgin ores, in combination with recycling end-of-use products, is required to meet this demand. As far back as Agricola’s famous text De Re Metallica in 1556, he recognised the importance of mineralogy in mining and metallurgy. Mineralogy is just as important today, especially because of the complexity of the current ores that we process. Mineralogy ultimately determines the requirements for the recovery of value, maximizing valuable mineral and metals grades, and whether we need to develop innovative technology. In addition, mineralogy also plays a key role in determining the risk potential of mine waste and helps us identify opportunities for valorising this waste. Over the last 20 years in the Centre for Minerals Research, working in collaboration with groups in the UCT Department of Chemical Engineering; including Minerals to Metals University of Cape Town, Centre for Bioprocess Engineering Research, Hydrometallurgy as well as other external collaborators and mentors – I’ve had a remarkable journey thus far. A very special thanks to the late Dee Bradshaw who got me started on this journey, and for all that she invested in developing my career. I look forward to how the next 20 years of research will unfold, tackling relevant problems in the minerals industry. Excited to share that I will be speaking at the #ProcessMineralogy24 conference taking place in 𝗖𝗮𝗽𝗲 𝗧𝗼𝘄𝗻, 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮, from 𝗡𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟭𝟭-𝟭𝟯, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰! I’ll be sharing findings from our work on characterizing the historical 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘄𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘇 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 from the Røros mining district, Norway, a 𝗨𝗡𝗘𝗦𝗖𝗢 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗦𝗶𝘁𝗲. Historical mine tailings are often overlooked, but their combination of ongoing environmental impact and potential as secondary resources makes them highly relevant. Understanding their 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 and the processes that influence them is crucial for their responsible management. Looking forward to connecting with fellow researchers and participating in insightful discussions in the field of process mineralogy!
