Research shows that people with a learning disability live on average up to 23 years less than those without. Often, they aren’t understood, or risk having their concerns dismissed, simply because they communicate and express themselves differently to the average patient or may not be able to advocate for themselves. We know this because we support thousands of people every day. Julie’s sister Caroline has a severe learning disability but it's when she visits the hospital that Julie is most concerned for her sister's wellbeing. 💬"I feel as if she is being treated like a second-class citizen." We want people with a learning disability to have access to the same quality of physical and mental healthcare as everybody else. Through our partnership with Omaze UK, the funds raised will help support our work in tackling these health inequalities. 👉Read Julie’s story https://brnw.ch/21wMKjo

Over the last few months, the Mencap Marvels, a group of 30 dedicated swimmers from all walks of life, have tackled the English Channel to raise money for Mencap. On Saturday the ‘Awesome Mencap Marvels’ squad completed their Channel swim in an incredible 12 hours and 19 minutes. To date, the Marvels have a one hundred per cent success rate in charity relay swims, with five other Mencap Marvel squads successfully completing their Channel swims this summer.  The 2024 squads have already raised an impressive £55,334 this year alone!   Nick Boaz, ‘Amazing Mencap Marvels’ Captain, said: “Beyond raising money, we hope this challenge helps to raise awareness for Mencap and the incredible work they do. Many of us swimming in the Marvels have a personal connection to the charity, just as I do. My sister has a learning disability and Mencap has been a great support to our family. We really want to help raise both awareness and the funds that make a difference for people with a learning disability.”

Our Chief Executive, Jon Sparkes OBE, was part of the panel invited to provide evidence to Lord Darzi's investigation into the state of the NHS.    We have issued the following responses on the urgent need to tackle the social care crisis and improve the healthcare system to provide high quality care to people with a learning disability.

Responding to the report from Lord Darzi into performance of the NHS, and especially the health inequalities and barriers experienced by people with a learning disability. Jon Sparkes, Chief Executive of learning disability charity, Mencap said: “The evidence in Lord Darzi’s report brings the health inequalities people with a learning disability face into stark focus. Only 4 in 10 people with a learning disability live to see their 65th birthday, and are four times more likely to die avoidably from treatable causes.   “People with a learning disability have faced multiple barriers to treatment and the healthcare system consistently not meeting their needs.   “The findings from this review must be looked at urgently and the healthcare system improved to provide high quality care and end the scandal of people with a learning disability dying avoidably decades younger.  This should include significantly increasing the numbers of people with a learning disability on the GP learning disability register, increasing the number of specialist learning disability nurses and funding a successful rollout of the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training in Learning Disability & Autism across health and social care. “We thank Lord Darzi for ensuring that the experiences of people with a learning disability were heard as part of this important review and we are ready to work with the government and the NHS to tackle these inequalities head on and deliver a health system that works for people with a learning disability.” https://lnkd.in/eTRD__7D
