I am incredibly proud that Metro.co.uk is today launching the Metro Pride Awards. And we need YOU to help us make it a success.   As one of the most diverse and inclusive news brands on Fleet Street, it is a huge honour to be chairman of these awards.    At Metro, we don’t confine ourselves to celebrating LGBTQ+ lives during the month of June – we celebrate it all year round.    That’s why we have chosen to host the event in February – a happy coincidence that it will be the 20th anniversary of the UK’s first LGBT+ History Month.    We are really looking forward to hearing about the people you nominate, the unsung heroes as well as those who have a big presence in the world of rainbows.    Like me, many people in the LGBTQ+ community understand that it is an important part of who we are, but we do not let it define us. Firstly I’m a husband, father, northerner and journalist.    But through my work I am in a very privileged position and that is why I took on the role of chairman for the Metro Pride Awards.    We really hope that you will get on board and help us to recognise those whose work champions LGBTQ+ life and celebrates the brilliant things that happen within the community.    But more important than that, we want to inspire and encourage people who are new to the LGBTQ+ world or struggling with their identity. Most of us have felt that self-doubt, shame and rejection at some point in our lives, but you’re really not alone.    Far from it. You are part of the bravest community there is, made up of countless heroes and trailer-blazers who are leaders in the great fight for justice, equality and respect.   And some of those leaders deserve to be recognised with a shiny Metro Pride trophy but we need your help to shine a light on the + superstars who inspire you and deserve recognition for their contribution to the LGBTQ+ community.

'Companies want to look anti-racist without actually doing the work,' writes Susan for Metro Opinion. ‘In light of our supposedly collective racial awakening in 2020 as a result of the murder of George Floyd and the BLM protests, companies have been scrambling to show they care about their Black employees. 'The problem with Black History Month is that many companies are more concerned with presenting themselves externally as anti-racist, rather than using the month as an opportunity to reflect on what they can do internally,' she says. Instead of symbolic gestures, workplaces can amplify minority-ethnic voices by integrating their perspectives into storytelling, marketing, and internal communications. We also need to be promoting inclusive leadership and actively recruiting and supporting minority-ethnic staff for leadership roles. 'Even when no one is looking, it is important to put a lot more thought into approaching diversity and inclusion initiatives throughout the year, not just during designated months or occasions,' Susan adds. A Metro investigation by Exclusives Reporter Josh Layton can reveal that MPs who have been suspended over sexual allegations still enjoy full access to parliament through ‘category X’ passes. Through a Freedom of Information request, Layton was shocked to discover that some of these include MPs who have been accused of sexual harassment. 'Westminster must be one of the few workplaces where a person can leave over unresolved issues, including allegations about an MP’s sexual conduct towards women, and still have unescorted access to the building for years to come. 'Along with the expenses that MPs lawfully claim for rent and council tax, it shows the disparity between their lives and the vast majority of working people.' Read the full investigation exclusively from Metro here ⬇️

It's not even been a year into the role and Noora Mykkanen has impressively carved out a transport beat, transforming Metro.co.uk's way of covering the topic. The Senior News Reporter works with editors to set the agenda each morning and break out any transport issues. Plus, she's even set up a travel live blog, which helps our readers, commuters and travellers know the latest news on how they're getting from A to B. The fact that so many societal issues intertwine with transport fascinates her. She wrote an in-depth explainer on how fuel protests crippled Britain for a week, how 1.4 million people could claim a share of £25,000,000 and even a feature on London's trams. Want to read more? Here are the links, as well as a couple other stories of Noora's that we're proud of: 🚇 Where you can still catch a tram in London after they almost disappeared ➡️ https://trib.al/EUFDXUJ 🚇 How train passengers can claim share of £25,000,000 compensation ➡️ https://trib.al/jE0qoi5 🚇 How fuel protests crippled Britain for a week – and could we see it again? ➡️ https://trib.al/rTcNYW4 🚇 Europe’s £8,100,000,000 high-speed train that puts the UK to shame ➡️ https://trib.al/LliZAYP 🚇 Dodge this borough if you want to avoid the worst traffic in London ➡️ https://trib.al/nSq3Vfn #journalism #transport #beat #expert

One minute Kitty Chrisp is having a laugh and interviewing comedians, and the next she’s writing an exclusive investigation on the troubling rise of Russell Brand’s fandom after assault and abuse allegations surfaced. Being so adaptable in her specialism of comedy and entertainment comes easily to Kitty, and we at Metro.co.uk are very lucky to have her. Right now Kitty is reporting live from the Edinburgh Fringe – one of the greatest celebrations of arts and culture on the planet – and loving how ‘wild’ it is.‘ 'I'm spending my afternoons and evenings at shows until about midnight, then waking up and writing up pieces in the morning and starting over again,' she explained. 'I'm basically trying to find the most interesting stories from comedians and platform them where I can!’ Here are just some of Kitty's brilliant writing from this year: 🎞 An exclusive investigation on the troubling rise of Russell Brand’s fandom ➡️ https://lnkd.in/efqJ3sbk 🎞 A review of Harry Potter’s Jessie Cave’s brilliantly confessional Edinburgh Fringe show ➡️ https://lnkd.in/er5KbGgs 🎞 An exclusive investigation on the sinister and ‘violent’ shift in British audiences ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eZ8Bgvkp 🎞 A thoughtful and well-written exclusive on why Edinburgh Fringe is the perfect tonic for neurodiverse comedians ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eFGmwvaq
