🌟 Welcome, Anna Rüßeler, to meLAB! 🌟 We are thrilled to welcome Anna Rüßeler from Leibniz Universität Hannover (Germany) and Laser Zentrum Hannover (LZH), who has joined us for a research secondment at meLAB, supervised by Dr Carlos Garcia Nuñez and Prof Hadi Heidari. Anna’s research visit is part of the Lower Saxony - Scotland Tandem Fellowship Programme, funded by the Ministry of Science and Culture of Lower Saxony. Her "miniaturized piezoelectric electro-optical modulator for space- and energy-saving photonic circuits" project focuses on creating compact, energy-efficient, and cost-effective photonic circuits by integrating cutting-edge piezoelectric technology. During her time here, Anna will work closely with our PhD student, Michael Mckinlay, who will also conduct a secondment at LZH in November. It has been a fantastic experience to come as an invited speaker to #European #Materials #Research #Society in Warsaw, Poland this week (E-MRS fall meeting). My talk discussed the advancements in #Triboelectric #nanogenerators (TENG) over the past 12 years, as well as my groups research on surface modifications to improve charge mobility within these systems. This work was conducted with the support of my research group Glasgow Microelectronics (meLAB), and with extensive collaboration from the Institute of Thin Films, Sensors and Imaging (ITFSI). I would like to thank my supervisor Dr Carlos Garcia Nuñez, as well as my co-supervisors Hadi Heidari and Des Gibson for their extensive support on my academic journey!

Thursday, 19 September 2024 at 8:00 Active Materials J11 In this invited talk, our PhD student Michael Mckinlay will present his latest research and vision on nanostructured metal oxides as promising electrodes for triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs). The work introduces a new physical vapour deposition technique to achieve ultra-high electron affinities in metal oxides, leading to larger surface charge densities and TENG with higher output powers and more efficient energy conversion. Key findings - Extensive study on the topology and structure of nanostructured thin films based on metal oxides for energy harvesting devices and self-powered sensors. - Investigation into the impacts of PVD conditions on the surface charge density and TENG output characteristics. - Analysis of the crystal quality of metal oxide thin films and power conversion efficiency of TENG. This research was conducted with the support of Glasgow Microelectronics (meLAB) University of Glasgow and the Institute of Thin Films, Sensors and Imaging (ITFSI) University of the West of Scotland under the supervision of Dr Carlos Garcia Nuñez, Hadi Heidari, Des Gibson
