We were thrilled to host this year's World Skills Day at MC Digital! 🙌 This regional competition featured three exciting categories, including: 🎮 3D Digital Game Art - Students created stunning 3D models of their dream islands, complete with buildings, foliage and water sources. 🖥️ Web Development - Students designed original web landing pages, based on a project company's branding. 📸 Media - Students captured the beauty of the North East's nature. A huge congratulations to our amazing Media students for securing second place in the competition! 👏

Middlesbrough College has officially launched its £12m TTE Centre – a cutting-edge technical training facility that will equip the next generation of engineers and skilled professionals. Renowned broadcaster and proud Teesside native, Steph McGovern, opened the centre on Thursday 20th March 2025, cutting the ribbon and touring the world-class facilities. Steph, who is passionate about supporting young people in STEM, praised the TTE Centre’s potential to transform lives and careers. She said: "It’s brilliant to see this kind of investment in the North East. The TTE Centre is exactly what young people need – access to world-class facilities and hands-on training that sets them up for successful careers. I was back at Middlesbrough College last week, judging this year's WorldSkills Regional Competition alongside Darren Emmett & Caden Galavan. Well done to all the participants, and especially to the winners, for their quality work! One thing I’ve noticed when working with student filmmakers is they often overcomplicate things. My advice? Keep it simple! Use a tripod. Let the action unfold in front of you—don’t chase it. A gimbal is great, but sometimes it’s better to stay still. Don’t overuse drones—they’re a tool, not the whole toolbox. Only use them if they add something to the story. And don’t forget about audio! Set your levels, use windshields, record clean audio on location, it matters! My approach is always to keep it simple, and mastering the basics has been key to my progress. There’s a time to push your skills further, but only once you’ve nailed the fundamentals. That’s when you can start breaking the rules. Competitions like this are great for getting things done. Less talking, more filming—getting out there is the best way to learn and improve your craft. Well done to Daniela Lord and the team at Middlesbrough College for organising a great day!

A trio of apprentices have secured full-time jobs at a Teesside manufacturer after successfully completing their courses with Middlesbrough College Group! Xander Brown, Fynn Walker and Tom Spencer started their journey to full-time employment with 45-day work placements at HC Controls as part of their Engineering T Level courses at Middlesbrough College. Management at HC Controls were so impressed with the trio that each of them were taken on as apprentices. All three completed their Level 3 Engineering Fitter Standard apprenticeship over a 45-month period, gaining Distinctions and full-time jobs!
