We empower and celebrate refugees + migrants on their journey to integration by supporting them to run cookery classes.

About us

Migrateful helps refugees and asylum seekers on their journey to employment and independence and promotes integration. It runs cookery classes led by migrant chefs struggling to integrate and access employment due to legal and linguistic barriers. The cookery classes provide ideal conditions not just for learning English and building confidence, but also for promoting contact and cultural exchange with the wider community. We train our chefs through weekly workshops, taking them on a journey from “passionate home cook” to “confident cookery class teacher.” Sessions begin with English conversation or confidence building exercises. Participants then take turns teaching the rest of the group how to cook their traditional cuisine, before all sitting down together to share the meal they have prepared. Participants build connections and work on further developing their English. When our chefs feel ready, they deliver evening cookery classes to paying customers, supported by Migrateful. These paid classes take place in cafes, or customers can host a class in their own home for themselves and their friends. Each class lasts around three hours, with an average of ten paying participants per class. Since Migrateful was founded in July 2017, we have run over 200 cookery classes with 2,000 participants and now have 16 chefs from Iran, Afghanistan, Lebanon, Egypt, Tunisia, Albania, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Ecuador and Cuba teaching their cuisines regularly.

We have over 20 brilliant Migrateful chefs your team can cook up a storm with at a private cookery class or demo in London, Bristol and online. Today, get to know Migrateful chef Meriam 👋 Meriam is from Algeria, the largest country in Africa, located between Morocco and Tunisia. While in Algeria, Meriam worked as a firefighter and paramedic for 13 years. Meriam's mum taught her how to cook when she was 10 years old. She tells us, "It has always brought me so much joy. My dream is to be a chef. I watched Masterchef on TV and I used to dream that I would be part of it." At Meriam's cookery sessions, your team will master recipes like Bourek (cheese and vegetable rolls), a celebratory dish, often served during Ramadan, Chakshouka (spiced pepper sauce), and stuffed Algerian dates, which are traditionally served to guests when they come to tea, or given as gifts 🎁 Join Meriam for a class at the Migrateful cookery school in Farringdon, or host a shorter cookery demo in your own space. 🎉 Celebrating Black History Month: Black voices on the triumph of migration and multiculturalism in British life & art  🎉 Today we marked Black History Month 2024 in Ogilvy UK with a fascinating panel discussion, celebrating the positive impact of migration on the UK. In response to the race riots earlier this year, we wanted to reclaim the narrative and shine a light on how the contributions of migrants have shaped our society, culture, and communities for the better. I'm so thankful to our speakers Vickie Wambura and Gaynor Tutani for their presence on our panel this morning, and for sharing their knowledge, experience and expertise with us so generously. Vickie is co-CEO of Migrateful, a fantastic charity empowering and integrating refugees and migrants through the shared love of food. Migrateful's cookery classes offer a unique platform for cultural exchange and connection - I can recommend their classes first hand - such an incredible experience. Learn more about their work at https://lnkd.in/dPgwGyZq Gaynor Tutani is a Creator, Producer and Writer, who goes by the creative name Art Adlib. She co-founded EARTHworks [Artists], specialising in 'Process in Practice' - embedded in decoloniality, aiming to challenge systems of power through collaborative work and programming. She is also Creative Programming Officer at Museum of the Home; her work there focuses on creating engaging and thought-provoking programs that explore the complexities of home and identity. https://lnkd.in/dBkCv3rr I have a whole cast of people to thank within Ogilvy UK for helping make this event such a success... Thank you so much Quinn Zaffre - exec sponsor of our cross-cultural ERG, Roots - for moderating the panel this morning with such poise and perceptiveness. Fatima M. for your insight and advice throughout, for being instrumental in our choice of speakers, and for the eloquent and engaging intro you delivered at the event today - thank you.   Thank you Saasha Akighir for your inimitable design – your strong visual really helped amplify the event within the agency.   Thanks to Matt Foster🇵🇭🇬🇧🏳️🌈 for curating such a brilliant and balanced conversation.    Thanks to Chanelle Olaleye for helping with all event logistics and ensuring we had a great array of black owned businesses as our suppliers, and BIG shout outs to Uncle John's Bakery & TOTTENHAM TOWN BAKERY LTD for the amazing catering - it went down a storm!   & lastly, big thanks to Jodene Robinson and Mabinty Taylor-Kamara whose idea this was in the first place. You guys are real agents for change, and your vision helped shift the narrative around immigration and multiculturalism - thank you. #BlackHistoryMonth #MulticulturalBritain #Migration #Diversity #Community #PanelDiscussion #BreakfastEvent #Migrateful #MuseumOfTheHome

Thank you - to the women in the Political Risk and Credit market who joined us for dinner - and to Chef Yasemin and Migrateful, for a wonderful evening. We learnt to wrap vine leaves, make dumplings and pumpkin for pudding! Migrateful is a charity that helps migrants on their journey to employment and integration. Harnessing the power of food, they bridge divides and foster unity. ✨ Want to Make a Real Impact This Christmas Season? ✨ I recently had the incredible opportunity to volunteer with Migrateful, an organization that empowers refugees, asylum seekers, and migrants through cooking classes. 🌍🍴 It was such a rewarding experience . Not only did I get to assist these amazing chefs while they shared their culture and food, but I also learned so much about their inspiring journeys and resilience. With Christmas just around the corner, it’s a perfect time to reflect on how we can all contribute a little good - whether it’s volunteering, donating, or simply offering help to someone in need. Small acts but big difference 💙 If you're looking for a way to give back and learn more about other cultures, I can’t recommend Migrateful enough. 🙏 #Volunteering #GivingBack #ChristmasSpirit

Last year, the brilliant ORCA team kindly offered their design skills and time to support Migrateful with the creation of our seven-and-a-half year impact report, in addition to working with several Migrateful chefs to develop branding for their personal food businesses. It was lovely to get the team back in to take part in new Bristol chef Celia's Hong Konger cookery class as a belated thank you for all of their wonderful work. We're so thrilled to hear everyone enjoyed the evening – hope to see you all again soon! 😁 💜

The experience went far beyond just cooking—it was a true celebration of community and culture. Set at The MAZI Project kitchens in Bristol, it gave us the opportunity to experience the service of two incredible charities we've been working closely with over the last 18 months.  Food has this incredible way of bringing people together, transcending language and background. In a world that can sometimes feel divided, sharing a meal created by various hands offers a simple but powerful reminder of our common humanity. Through Migrateful, people like Celia are not only preserving their heritage but also offering a beautiful gateway for others to connect and understand cultures they may not be too familiar with. Cooking alongside strangers who quickly became friends, we chopped, sautéed, and tasted our way through a delicious journey, learning the stories behind each ingredient and dish. The evening was a testament to how food can be a bridge to understanding culture and tradition. Migrateful's mission to empower refugee and migrant chefs on their journey to integration is a powerful model of how sharing food can make a meaningful difference in people's lives, fostering both inclusion and appreciation for others around us. Team Retreat with a Purpose at Migrateful 🌍🍽️ This Monday, our team had the incredible opportunity to spend a day at Migrateful, a wonderful organisation that empowers refugees and asylum seekers by helping them on their journey to employment and independence through cookery classes. It was a day of not only learning new culinary skills but also gaining a deeper understanding of the challenges migrant chefs face and how they are overcoming barriers through food, language, and cultural exchange. We were guided by Nadereh, a talented Migrateful chef, who shared both her traditional Kurdish Iranian cuisine and personal journey with us. The experience was as much about community, connection, and sharing stories as it was about cooking. A heartfelt thank you to the Migrateful team and chefs for welcoming us and giving us a chance to be part of their mission for integration and empowerment. If you’re looking for a unique way to support refugee communities and learn something delicious in the process, we highly recommend booking a cookery class with Migrateful! #TeamDayOut #CulturalExchange #SocialImpact #CommunitySupport #EmpowermentThroughFood #CSR #RefugeeSupport #Migrateful #SocialValueTogether Dan Ebanks Zahra Shah Ruth Shave Laura Miller Bart Kurek

Last night, co-CEOs Jess and Vickie had a fantastic time at the Food & Travel Reader Awards after being shortlisted for the Cookery School of the Year category! 🏆✨ Although we didn’t take home the win (this time!), we are incredibly proud for our cookery school to have received this recognition. Being nominated alongside some of the best cookery schools in the country—none of which have a charity element— was a truly proud moment for all of us. It tells us that our social enterprise model is working; our cookery school not only supports refugees and migrants but also delivers an exceptional culinary experience to our customers. Thank you to everyone who voted for us! Your continued support means the world to us! 🧅💜

Last Thursday, members of our multi-ethnicity racial alliance (MERA) and wider I&D network had the incredible opportunity to visit Migrateful, a non-profit, with a mission to celebrate refugees and migrants on their journey to integration. Migrateful supports these individuals by empowering them to run their own cookery classes, recognising the unifying power of food to bridge divides, challenge stereotypes and promote unity. During our visit, we had the privilege of attending a cookery class taught by refugees and migrants who shared their authentic cuisine with us. Led by head chef Guncha we learnt how to make a variety of traditional Turkmen food. This included a govrulan borek, a traditional snack, a pishmeh, typically served at celebrations, and a delicious beetroot salad. As we prepared these delicious dishes we had the opportunity to hear Gunchas inspiring story. It was a truly unforgettable experience and thank you to Migrateful and also to Derin Akinbobola for organising the event.
