We empower and celebrate refugees + migrants on their journey to integration by supporting them to run cookery classes.

About us

Migrateful helps refugees and asylum seekers on their journey to employment and independence and promotes integration. It runs cookery classes led by migrant chefs struggling to integrate and access employment due to legal and linguistic barriers. The cookery classes provide ideal conditions not just for learning English and building confidence, but also for promoting contact and cultural exchange with the wider community. We train our chefs through weekly workshops, taking them on a journey from “passionate home cook” to “confident cookery class teacher.” Sessions begin with English conversation or confidence building exercises. Participants then take turns teaching the rest of the group how to cook their traditional cuisine, before all sitting down together to share the meal they have prepared. Participants build connections and work on further developing their English. When our chefs feel ready, they deliver evening cookery classes to paying customers, supported by Migrateful. These paid classes take place in cafes, or customers can host a class in their own home for themselves and their friends. Each class lasts around three hours, with an average of ten paying participants per class. Since Migrateful was founded in July 2017, we have run over 200 cookery classes with 2,000 participants and now have 16 chefs from Iran, Afghanistan, Lebanon, Egypt, Tunisia, Albania, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Ecuador and Cuba teaching their cuisines regularly.

We have over 20 brilliant Migrateful chefs your team can cook up a storm with at a private cookery class or demo in London, Bristol and online. Today, get to know Migrateful chef Meriam 👋 Meriam is from Algeria, the largest country in Africa, located between Morocco and Tunisia. While in Algeria, Meriam worked as a firefighter and paramedic for 13 years. Meriam's mum taught her how to cook when she was 10 years old. She tells us, "It has always brought me so much joy. My dream is to be a chef. I watched Masterchef on TV and I used to dream that I would be part of it." At Meriam's cookery sessions, your team will master recipes like Bourek (cheese and vegetable rolls), a celebratory dish, often served during Ramadan, Chakshouka (spiced pepper sauce), and stuffed Algerian dates, which are traditionally served to guests when they come to tea, or given as gifts 🎁 Join Meriam for a class at the Migrateful cookery school in Farringdon, or host a shorter cookery demo in your own space. Team Retreat with a Purpose at Migrateful 🌍🍽️ This Monday, our team had the incredible opportunity to spend a day at Migrateful, a wonderful organisation that empowers refugees and asylum seekers by helping them on their journey to employment and independence through cookery classes. It was a day of not only learning new culinary skills but also gaining a deeper understanding of the challenges migrant chefs face and how they are overcoming barriers through food, language, and cultural exchange. We were guided by Nadereh, a talented Migrateful chef, who shared both her traditional Kurdish Iranian cuisine and personal journey with us. The experience was as much about community, connection, and sharing stories as it was about cooking. A heartfelt thank you to the Migrateful team and chefs for welcoming us and giving us a chance to be part of their mission for integration and empowerment. If you’re looking for a unique way to support refugee communities and learn something delicious in the process, we highly recommend booking a cookery class with Migrateful! #TeamDayOut #CulturalExchange #SocialImpact #CommunitySupport #EmpowermentThroughFood #CSR #RefugeeSupport #Migrateful #SocialValueTogether Dan Ebanks Zahra Shah Ruth Shave Laura Miller Bart Kurek

Last night, co-CEOs Jess and Vickie had a fantastic time at the Food & Travel Reader Awards after being shortlisted for the Cookery School of the Year category! 🏆✨ Although we didn’t take home the win (this time!), we are incredibly proud for our cookery school to have received this recognition. Being nominated alongside some of the best cookery schools in the country—none of which have a charity element— was a truly proud moment for all of us. It tells us that our social enterprise model is working; our cookery school not only supports refugees and migrants but also delivers an exceptional culinary experience to our customers. Thank you to everyone who voted for us! Your continued support means the world to us! 🧅💜

Last Thursday, members of our multi-ethnicity racial alliance (MERA) and wider I&D network had the incredible opportunity to visit Migrateful, a non-profit, with a mission to celebrate refugees and migrants on their journey to integration. Migrateful supports these individuals by empowering them to run their own cookery classes, recognising the unifying power of food to bridge divides, challenge stereotypes and promote unity. During our visit, we had the privilege of attending a cookery class taught by refugees and migrants who shared their authentic cuisine with us. Led by head chef Guncha we learnt how to make a variety of traditional Turkmen food. This included a govrulan borek, a traditional snack, a pishmeh, typically served at celebrations, and a delicious beetroot salad. As we prepared these delicious dishes we had the opportunity to hear Gunchas inspiring story. It was a truly unforgettable experience and thank you to Migrateful and also to Derin Akinbobola for organising the event. On Friday our team had the opportunity to go to Migrateful for our Art of Kindness event. Migrateful's mission is to celebrate refugees and migrants on their journey to integration by supporting them to run their own cookery classes. We spent an afternoon cooking Iranian food, making three dishes under the careful guidance of Razieh, who patiently supported us in making dishes from her country. We listened to her story, cooked her dishes and then all sat down to eat and enjoy the fabulous food. Not only was it the perfect opportunity to support this charity and the work it does but it was also a great way to spend time as a team and learn something new. Thank you to Lauren A. and Jane Marshall for organising this for us.

Last week, our team at Reply had the pleasure of attending a Migrateful Cookery Class led by the wonderful Chef Zeenat, who shared the vibrant flavours of West African cuisine. We learned to make the classic Ghanaian dish, Efo Riro, with yam and plantain — so delicious! 😋🌿 It was a great opportunity to bond as a team, enhance our culinary skills, and support Migrateful, a charity that empowers asylum seekers, refugees, and migrants through cookery.🎗️ A big thank you to David Otter for organising this across the UK recruitment and HR teams, and to the Migrateful team for hosting such a fun and memorable experience! 🍽️👩🏽🍳 #Migrateful #Charity #TeamBonding #HR #Recruitment #Reply #LifeAtReply #Cooking
