Choosing a PR agency partner? Ask these 5 questions first. ✅ It’s PR and marketing buying season. PR leaders have issued their briefs, agencies have submitted and/or pitched their proposals. Time for some Q&As. What questions do you as PR buyers ask? After years of working both in-house and agency communications roles - and now as a co-owner of Milk & Honey PR | Certified B Corp, an international boutique PR agency – I know some of the top questions leaders ask before they sign with an agency. Aside from the operational questions, here are the top 5 questions that I’ve personally asked as a client… and why they matter. 1. “How do you handle difficult conversations or feedback?” ❓ Why it matters: No agency is perfect... and most clients don’t expect perfection. However, what they do expect is proactive and clear communication and accountability…especially when things didn’t go to plan. 2. “How would you grow with us — across markets or priorities?” ❓ Why it matters: Requirements, timing and priorities shift. Good PR partners scale up, down, or sideways depending on what’s next - product launches, expansion into new markets, internal change. 3. “How do you measure impact — and what does ROI look like?” ❓ Why it matters: Senior leadership and Board members are regularly asking, "What are we getting from PR?". In 2025, PR spend, like any corporate spend, needs to show up clearly in their reporting… not just about reach, impressions and likes. It needs to show relevance, outcomes, and alignment to business goals. 4. “What’s your culture like, and how do your values show up in your work?” ❓Why it matters: Clients are increasingly asking if their agency walks the talk. After all, PR is about credibility. Today, many are choosing partners with shared values, whether that’s responsible or sustainable business practices or strong internal processes. 5. “What do your existing clients say about working with you?” ❓ Why it matters: It’s one thing to say you're collaborative, passionate and creative. It’s quite another when clients vouch for them. More in-house PR leads are now asking for direct referrals or third-party reviews… platforms like Clutch help with this. Far from just a checklist, these questions are an invitation to a deeper conversation about working style, expectations, and alignment.
