Cities are hotspots for air pollution, with tall buildings trapping harmful emissions in ‘street canyons’. But what if we could turn those very walls into a solution? A study carried out by researchers at the University of Birmingham in 2012 showed how living walls can significantly improve air quality in urban areas by reducing pollutants like nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) and particulate matter (PM10). The research found that: ✅ Green walls can cut NO₂ levels by up to 40% in street canyons ✅ PM10 concentrations dropped by up to 60% when walls were fully covered with plants ✅ The air-cleaning effect was strongest when pollution was at its worst – a natural buffer against peak pollution levels! Air pollution remains a major challenge in cities worldwide. Lucky me, being invited to Schneider Electric to take part in a panel discussion exploring the evolving challenges as the transition to EV gains pace. Once getting a grid connection for an EV hub was 'easy' (in hindsight). Now both the considerations - and opportunities - are broader. Let me share my experience. 🔌 The EV Grid Challenge: What’s the Solution? 🚗⚡ As demand for public and fleet EV charging hubs grows, securing grid connections is becoming one of the biggest hurdles. But, what’s making it so complex? 💡 Rising Power Demand & Grid Constraints Larger loads are needed for ultra-rapid charging, future-proofing considerations, or simpky the volume of charging hubs in a locality. Securing power at the right voltage in the right place is getting harder - longer cable routes, higher voltages (33kV+) and DNO reinforcements can all add cost, time and more legals. ⚡ Technical Challenges & Grid Compliance Dynamic load management helps, but DNOs don’t always accept it as a reliable long-term solution. Grid constraints like export limitations, harmonics, and G99 compliance mean battery energy storage (BESS) isn’t always an easy fix. ✅ At Rock, We Are Achieving Success Despite the Challenges How? This isn’t just an ask to the DNOs anymore - it’s a discussion and a collaboration to find a grid solution. Smart solutions like microgrids, load balancing, and on-site storage can help unlock capacity. Or a multi-phase connection with interim solutions whilst waiting for the larger capacity availability. Very often, clients transitioning fleets or forecasting large loads often get lost (understandably) in the process - but there are ways to navigate it. 💬 Need help making sense of your DNO offer?
