An important day for us here – we have completed in-house sintering of our simulated spent nuclear fuel for WATSS tests!   The simulated fuel will be used to prove the first stage of the WATSS process before hotcell tests with actual spent fuel.   WATSS (‘WAste To Stable Salt') is the reprocessing system we are creating for spent #nuclear fuel, which will reduce high-level waste volumes by over 90%. It will extract the useful transuranic elements, which can be used to create new fuel, and leave the depleted uranium behind as an easily stored low-radioactivity material.   These pictures show WATSS team members Jose P.
