The first female Chancellor, Rachel Reeves, took to her feet to deliver the first formal fiscal statement on behalf of the new Labour Government. An opportunity for the Government to set out its strategy to deliver growth in the UK economy, avoid austerity, stabilise the economy, and lay out what tax measures and changes are required to deliver on these objectives. The most keenly anticipated Budget in memory came off the back of intense speculation on likely, impending tax changes in areas such as Capital Gains Tax, Inheritance Tax, Employer’s National Insurance contributions, and the possibility of a continuing freeze on income tax thresholds. Scotland’s leading business organisation has urged the UK government to put investment at the heart of today’s UK budget. Speaking at a Scottish Chambers of Commerce reception at Edinburgh Castle last night, President Stephen Leckie said: “Our budget focus is on growth, investment, and competitiveness. That means investing in skills, technology, and infrastructure, and equipping the workforce for tomorrow’s challenges. “The Chancellor’s actions and the message they send will directly impact business confidence and investment at a time when we need to create positive momentum. We hope that our calls to support business have been listened to and not ignored.” ➡️ https://lnkd.in/ez_bGP7u #TogetherWeGrow

Labour's first Budget for 14 years will be delivered by Chancellor Rachel Reeves on Wednesday 30 October. She has warned that it will involve "difficult decisions". The Budget speech usually starts at about 12:30 UK time and lasts around an hour. Labour has repeatedly said that it needs to make difficult financial decisions. When the party took power in July, Reeves said it had "inherited the worst set of circumstances since the Second World War" regarding the government finances, something the Conservatives deny. Reeves is now looking to make tax rises and spending cuts to the value of £40bn, according to government sources. ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eqSG3E5f
