Who better to explain the Morson STEM Foundation and the Maker Space than the director herself, Dr Maria Stukoff! 🔧💡 For National STEM Day, we spoke to Maria about her story - from an education that saw her spend time across three different countries, to working as the Head of the Global Academic Development Programme for video game giant Sony PlayStation and to her current role as the Director of the Maker Space at the University of Salford, a key component of the Morson STEM Foundation. At Morson, we're committed to widening participation in #STEM subjects, helping to carve pathways for typically underrepresented groups. Part of this work is practical, such as our Morson STEM Foundation, which brings together a programme of activity in collaboration with regional skill providers, local employers, and industry stakeholders to develop STEM pathways. But an important part of this journey is also educational, helping young people understand that the barriers they might typically think exist, actually don't ❗ Here are a few common myths, busted: - "I don't have good enough grades." 📝✍ You don't necessarily need top grades in maths and physics to become an engineer. It's more important to have an interest and general aptitude in these subjects, along with a creative flair for discovering solutions to problems. - "I didn't go to university." 🎓 You don't HAVE to go to university. Apprenticeships and degree apprenticeships are seen as equally strong qualifications in engineering, and come with a raft of benefits including a head start in hands-on experience. - "I'm a woman and won't fit in to a male-dominated industry." 👩 While statistically there are still more men in STEM-based roles than women, the number of women in STEM occupations has doubled to 1.4 million in the past decade. Gender is no barrier. - "I can't afford to pay back the tuition fees" 👨🏻🎓💷 You're not on your own, and support is available. For example, the Amazon Future Engineer Scholarship is a national programme aimed at specifically supporting women A-level and BTEC/OCR students from low-income households who wish to study engineering courses at UK universities What are your common myths about STEM? We'll be honest; we had a bit of a lump in our throats reading the annual report from Primary Engineer! 💜 For those of you who don't know, this not-for-profit organisation takes engineering into schools with a variety of engaging programmes for primary- and secondary-school pupils. (Watch the video below to find out more) We are proud to support Primary Engineer, not only through funding but also by working with both teachers and pupils as they explore the world of engineering. Volunteers from Morson Projects have helped teachers in local schools to prepare and deliver STEM-based projects and engaged with students looking to learn more about what it's like to be a real-life engineer. Primary Engineer's 2023-24 Annual Report, released this month, shows the significant impact that its initiatives are having on the future of our industry, getting young people interested in and inspired by engineering while breaking down stereotypes. This year has been particularly notable with pupil engagement up by an impressive 48%. In total, 35,141 pupils, 1,524 teachers and 334 engineers took part in programmes throughout the year. But it's the individual stories that stand out to us most! 👦👧 They tell of children who have discovered a love of engineering, of girls who realised the subject isn't just for boys, and of young people working together to achieve things they may not have thought possible. There has never been a better time to get involved with Primary Engineer as an industry partner, so do read the report. https://lnkd.in/evWHw-ZC #PrimaryEngineer #Engineering #STEM #Education #IndustryPartnership #NationalSTEMDay

Super proud to have placed 42nd in the Best Companies top 100 large companies to work for. Leaping a massive 39 places up from 81 last year. What a brilliant achievement and fantastic recognition for colleagues and particularly for Ged Mason, OBE, HonDBA who has spent the past 30 years cultivating a people first culture, following his father before him. Continuous improvement every single year takes consistency and discipline. We can never ask for more than that! A HUGE thankyou personally to my team who I know have worked tirelessly over the past 5 years. Listening to our people, enabling and empowering managers, caring and supporting every single day. Days like this don’t just happen.
