𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗙𝗹𝗼𝘄𝘀: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗨𝗻𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆’𝘀 𝗣𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 Many of my recent posts have touched on the idea that information flows are crucial for solving some of the construction industry’s biggest challenges. But what does that really mean, and how do we get there? The goal is to establish connected information that flows seamlessly across teams and project phases. Ideally, we want to avoid duplicating information or manually re-entering it—because every time we do, we increase the risk of errors. Instead, we should aim for a single source of truth that everyone can rely on. When I talk about #information, I’m not just referring to "BIM"! For me, information includes every document, every data point, and every process, whether it’s design, procurement, inspections, or beyond. It covers the entire lifecycle of a project—before, during, and after construction. So, what are the components of effective information management? Here’s what I believe we need: 𝟭) 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 - To manage information well, we need a clear framework. Standards ensure that everyone knows the rules of the game, from how data and information are produced to how it's shared and managed. ISO 19650-2 is the most important one from a process perspective and ISO 7817-1:2024 is also useful for how information requirements get specified. 𝟮) 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹𝘀 – Some might call this a taxonomy, but it’s essentially a structure that organises data. For example, the IFC model is widely used to standardize data across different software platforms, but there are many other examples as well like CIPHOS. 𝟯) 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀 – Take Uniclass, for example. Classification systems allow teams to consistently describe objects, assets, processes and deliverables. With a consistent vocabulary, everyone from designers to builders to facility managers can clearly understand what’s being discussed, reducing ambiguity and streamlining communication. Other examples include NRM, SFG 20, Omniclass, Masterformat and many others. 4) Systems to support information management ;) I truly believe we are at the cusp of an industry shift. All of the ingredients for effective information management are there. Some companies are already many steps ahead having implemented the various building blocks in different places. As they put them together, they'll become unstoppable and have a foundation for long-term success! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- P.S. Over the next few weeks, I'll be posting my learnings and opinions from 6 years of running Morta in the lead-up to our virtual community day on November 25th. From Subjective to Objective: The Future of Progress Control in Digital Construction 📊 Reporting progress is one of construction's biggest challenges. Picture this: A foundation activity is underway. One team member reports it’s 50% complete, another 60%, and a third 40%. How can the same task be measured so differently? The truth is, the way we measure progress is often subjective. This subjectivity is a problem because it affects performance metrics—metrics that management rely on to keep projects on schedule and within budget. These same metrics drive future planning and decision-making. In other words, accurate progress monitoring isn’t just about recording what’s been done; it’s essential for driving the next steps and ensuring successful project delivery. To make progress control effective, a system needs to be: --Easy and quick to update --Consistent and at the right level of detail --Accurate validation with objective steps that aren't open to interpretation Here’s where it gets interesting: objects give us a consistent unit of measure, eliminating the need to manually crunch numbers or estimate completed quantities. Progress becomes binary—either an object is done or it isn’t—which simplifies the entire process for site engineers. Now when i say object, most of you will think of the site based objects (or entities) in IFC language. But where I think it gets interesting is the same concept can be extended beyond objects that are geometrically modeled … purchase orders, material requisitions, delivery notes, contracts, documents/files, drawings, inspection reports, etc are all examples of objectives. Given the progress we’ve made in #digitalconstruction, we now have access to real data for every key project function—design, procurement, and fieldwork. This presents a unique opportunity to rethink how we monitor progress. I hear a lot about scanning technologies as a solution, but these just generate additional #data on actuals. We already have so much data at our disposal from inspections, time cards, and field systems—why aren’t we leveraging the data from those more effectively? ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- P.S.
