Jumpstart your Career – Supporting the Future – Student Shanta Stolk Hi! I'm Shanta Stolk, from The Netherlands. I did a one-week internship at Van Oord Offshore Wind UK because renewable energy is such an interesting topic in the world right now. The office has different departments, during my week here I saw a little bit of everything; like engineering, planning, finance, and HR for example. The departments were all so different, but all so interesting. I'm not sure what I want to do in the future, so being here helped me see what jobs I might like or do not like. I had to come up with my own questions for my internship project for school, but I found that most of them were answered just by observing. I'm also working on a school project where I have to design an island that generates energy. Being at the office gave me a good idea of how such projects start and how they work in real life. Everyone at the office was really nice and helpful, which made my experience even better. Overall, I learned a lot during my time at Van Oord Offshore Wind UK and it was a great experience! My name is Go Ogawa. I am pursuing my master’s in mechanical engineering at the University of Glasgow in Scotland and had the opportunity to do a 5th -year project with Van Oord Offshore Wind UK at MPI Offshore, Stokesley between July to December 2023 (~6 months). My objective during my external project was to enhance my understanding of the offshore wind industry as it is one of my current interests and I believe renewable energy will be of key importance for the future. My time at MPI Offshore has provided me with great insight into the industry and allowed me to experience the work and hardship that occurs behind the scenes with professionals at MPI Offshore in Stokesley, England and Van Oord in Gorinchem, Netherlands. I had been working under the Foundation Unit investigating alternatives to MPI Offshore’s current approach using vessel motion analysis software to calculate loads experienced by cargo for designing sea-fastening mechanisms. I have investigated the feasibility, potential benefits, and applicability of the alternative approach in compliance with industry standards and focused on optimization of it. I have developed a calculation sheet for the company which incorporates my findings and enables the company to calculate these design loads within seconds compared to 1-2 hours of simulation and tabulation of results from motion analysis software. I have been introduced to a variety of applications from motion analysis software to structural software which is commonly used in the procedures for the design of sea-fastening and have thoroughly developed my understanding of the procedures and considerations taken, and the background knowledge that comes with it, thanks to guidance from experienced people in Van Oord Offshore Wind. The people in Van Oord have been helpful and always answered questions I had during my time here. Working in Van Oord Offshore Wind has been fulfilling and impactful, providing me valuable insight into real-life skills required in the future. I am grateful for the experience and skills I have acquired. I would like to express my gratitude to the people who helped me have such a unique opportunity and the people who guided me during my project.
