CORPOWER SECURES FUNDS TO SCALE WAVE ENERGY TECHNOLOGY Wave energy developer CorPower Ocean has raised €32 million in Series B1 funding to advance the commercialization of its wave energy technology. LIBERIA BEGINS CONSTRUCTION OF FIRST SOLAR FACILITY Liberia has broken ground on its first utility-scale solar power plant in an effort to diversify the country's energy mix and address power shortages. The 20 MW facility is being constructed at the site of the existing 88 MW Mount Coffee Hydropower Station in Harrisburg, Montserrado County. President Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr. attended the groundbreaking ceremony, emphasizing the project's importance in tackling energy deficits, particularly during dry seasons when hydroelectric production declines. The World Bank has provided grant funding for the project under its Regional Emergency Solar Power Intervention Project. Additional support has come from various international partners, including the African Development Bank Group and the European Union. EUROPE'S FIRST HYDROGEN CHP PLANT COMMISSIONED INNIO Group has commissioned Europe's first 1 MW hydrogen combined heat and power (CHP) plant at RAG Austria AG's site in Gampern. The Jenbacher CHP plant, which began operations in June 2024, uses green hydrogen produced during summer and stored underground to generate electricity and heat for the industrial facility during winter. The hydrogen is produced during the summer through water electrolysis using surplus solar power which is then stored in an underground porous reservoir hydrogen storage facility in Rubensdorf. This storage facility can hold up to 4.2 GWh of surplus solar power in the form of hydrogen. KENYA SECURES $736 MILLION ENERGY INVESTMENT Adani Energy Solutions Ltd. has signed a $736 million agreement with Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Limited (KETRACO) to build and operate key power transmission lines and substations in Kenya. NEW SCHEME TO DRIVE INVESTMENT IN RENEWABLE ENERGY STORAGE The UK government has announced a new investment support scheme to boost long duration electricity storage (LDES) technologies, including pumped storage hydropower. The initiative aims to increase renewable energy storage capacity and enhance energy security by unlocking billions in private investment. The scheme will use a "cap and floor" mechanism to provide financial support to developers, removing barriers that have hindered large-scale energy storage projects for nearly 40 years. This approach guarantees a minimum income for developers while limiting excessive profits. Energy Minister Michael Shanks emphasized the importance of expanding LDES capacity for the UK's transition to renewable power. The scheme is expected to create jobs, reduce reliance on fossil fuels, and help make Britain a "clean energy superpower". Ofgem will regulate the scheme, with the first round of applications anticipated next year. The British Hydropower Association welcomed the announcement, urging swift implementation to maintain the UK's competitive edge. Currently, the UK has 2.8 GW of LDES capacity from existing pumped storage hydro schemes.
