Travelling back home after a very busy day looking over the Manchester skyline. What are my initial reflections following the Mtech Access NHS Symposium 2024? Honestly, I have so many questions and aspects to unpick. But there are a few things I will keep reminding myself. To keep seeking solutions that benefit the three stakeholders: patients (you/me/our loved ones), the NHS (maybe also you/me/our loved ones), and industry (also you/me/our loved ones). Finding those collaborations, areas of mutual agreement/need, talking the same language, respect and accountability.

Have you heard of the Van Westendorp method for price testing? In our recent article on 'willingness to pay', Heather Wellam (Senior Consultant – Market Access, Mtech Access) compares 5 methodologies for price testing with payers and other key stakeholders, including the Van Westendorp method. ❓ What is the Van Westendorp method? The Van Westendorp method is a pricing technique that focuses on how respondents perceive a product’s value at different price levels. In this approach, participants are asked to indicate price points that they associate with various perceptions of value: prohibitively expensive, expensive, inexpensive, and so inexpensive that it raises doubts about quality. This information helps to identify the range of prices that align with the perceived value of the product. 👍 Advantages of the Van Westendorp price testing method: This methodology is simple to conduct and has the advantage of assessing a range of price levels, linked to perceived product value, rather than simply testing one price. It is straightforward to conduct and provides valuable insights by assessing a range of price levels rather than just one. This can be particularly useful during the early stages of product development, when only a draft target product profile is available, or when there is no clear comparator. 👎 Limitations of the Van Westendorp price testing method: As respondents know they are participating in a pricing study, this awareness might artificially increase their sensitivity to price. Additionally, the concept of ‘expensive’ as perceived by respondents does not always directly translate to actual reimbursement or prescribing behaviours.
