⏳ For too many people, their time in prison is time wasted. Around 50% of people in prisons managed by HMPPS are not in work or education, whilst for those that are, the prison work day does not reflect a typical work day in the outside world. Our campaign wants to see people in prison given a working pattern that reflects a typical day of work on the outside as much as possible. Watch our campaign film and please share it to help us raise awareness. The Labour Government’s launch of the sentencing review presents a key opportunity to reshape our criminal justice system into a more modern, sustainable system that can better serve our communities. 📢 Nacro’s response to the government's review of prison sentencing 🗣️ “This is a welcome announcement. This review provides a long-overdue opportunity to reset the criminal justice system. It needs to be led by the evidence of what works, ensure it focuses on putting victims and safer communities at the heart of the system and propose the changes we need to reduce reoffending in the long-term. "People with convictions will be the most loyal, most dedicated employees you can find because they are so grateful that someone has given them a second chance." We agree with Richard Branson – we see firsthand how employment on release ensures that people leaving prison can build fulfilling lives. https://lnkd.in/ePqN4X7g #workafterprison #prisonwork #employment #secondchance #work #rehabilitation #resettlement

Our service users and staff recently took part in three days of peer researcher training facilitated by Dr Sarah Lewis and Kamali Stevens (FRSA) from Penal Reform Solutions. This was a great opportunity to explore the values of lived experience and peer research and how we can all use it to benefit the services we deliver, the people we support and our campaigns. The people we support who attended are all part of Nacro’s Justice ExChange, which is a group of people that use their lived experience of the justice system to campaign for improvements in the system. One of the members of our Justice ExChange said: “Nacro have allowed me to be seen and heard as a person once again” – and that’s what we are all about! Thank you to Penal Reform Solutions for the insightful training and to BCLP (Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner LLP) for providing us with the room. #peerresearch #livedexperience #research #policyresearch #serviceuserinvolvement #researchtraining #training #charitytraining #justice #justicesystem #socialjustice

Such a fascinating discussion at the Better Justice Partnership workshop today. So grateful to all the brilliant people who gave up their afternoon to contribute with such passion and insight. It was a chance to air important debates about policing and sentencing and help us make choices about where we focus our policy calls. Extra special thanks to Campbell Robb Gemma Buckland Helen Berresford Meka Beresford Andrew Neilson Annette So Penelope Gibbs for chairing/presenting.

🌱 Our Manchester based Outdoor Learning project provides opportunities for young people – many facing disadvantage – to explore nature and learn new skills. They are hoping to turn a recently gifted old yellow school bus into a nature classroom and quiet space. Any donation are massively appreciated, thank you! https://lnkd.in/exiWmEwN #Manchester #outdoorlearning #outdoorskills #education #alternativeeducation #outdooreducation

📢 #EndShortSentences 📢 Sending people to prison for a few months at a time for non-violent offences without ever addressing the reasons behind their offending does nothing to reduce crime and simply traps people in a revolving door of prison. “Josiah appears more confident in his body language and seems happy with the work he is doing in store.” “Since starting the program, already, Chloe’s approach and attitude are so much more positive. It’s really made a difference.” These are just some of the comments from the parents of our Supported Internship students who started their course last week. In partnership with Asda Sheffield and DFN Project SEARCH , our Supported Internships are designed to support any young person with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) to gain the skills and confidence employers are actively seeking through vocational training and real-world work experience. Enabling young people to build their CV and start a career in sectors such as business and retail. Our current cohort of students have already made a positive impression on the teams and local community and have shared their reflections below.
