The nature intelligence company

About us

natcap is a nature intelligence company spun out of Oxford University. We build products to help corporates manage nature risk, set nature targets, and meet emerging reporting requirements - analogous to how software platforms have improved carbon accounting & climate risk. We do this by enabling businesses to understand and improve their interactions with nature - dependencies, impacts, risks, & opportunities. We are a team of ecologists and engineers with expertise across biodiversity, hydrology, forests, and agriculture. We are a TNFD (Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures) Data Catalyst and a member of the SBTN (Science Based Targets Network) Engagement Program.

Last week, animals took to the streets. Banksy’s ‘London Zoo’ series reminds us of an all-too-often ignored topic in nature → the connectivity of ecosystems. The street artist’s latest series has captured global attention, though no one is yet sure of its meaning. However, one thing is clear: there is increasing pressure on nature and natural landscapes, and undisturbed land is declining. In pristine environments, habitats are easy to traverse, allowing access to vital resources, food sources, and genetically diverse mates. Yet, as the built environment grows – from roads to housing – we’re seeing landscapes fragmented, devastating local wildlife: that’s animals and plants. This fragmentation of natural habits causes disturbance across the ecological spectrum, including: • Disruption in wildlife migration patterns • Isolation of species populations • Greater susceptibility to environmental stresses With COP16 around the corner, there’s hope that policymakers will start to address the importance of driving and advocating for clarity on transition pathways while amplifying the scope and pressure of nature reporting requirements. Unlike climate, nature is incredibly location-specific, and we have a real opportunity here. Increased pressure on nature reporting in line with clear biodiversity targets can drive real change on the ground, helping tackle both the climate and biodiversity crises. What did you takeaway from Banky’s latest works? #biodiversity #streetart #naturepositive 📸 © Banksy

This year, 1 August is #EarthOvershootDay. Unfortunately, that means humanity’s demand for ecological resources in a given year has exceeded what Earth can regenerate. Since the early 1970s, humanity has been in an ecological deficit, according to a report based on United Nations data. The first global “Earth Overshoot Day” fell on 25 December 1971. This date is brought forward little by little every year, significantly impacting reserves for future generations and underscoring our responsibility to act. Discover why there is still time to ditch this trend and why immediate action is crucial: https://lnkd.in/dGEbnM-C
