We run LocumDeck, an independent booking platform. Try us for free! 🏆 Digital Solutions Provider of the Year 2023
About us
We are the independent membership body for GP locums and salaried GPs in the UK. Founded by GPs for GPs, we’ve spent 25 years supporting, listening to and engaging with sessional GPs. We now have an audience of over 7,000 GPs. Since 2015, we have run an independent GP locum booking system, LocumDeck. Created by NASGP in collaboration with GP locums and practices, our platform makes booking easier for both parties. Over 3,000 UK GP practices use LocumDeck to book GP locums. In 2023 our platform LocumDeck was named Digital Solutions Provider of the Year by Cogora's General Practice Awards. On LocumDeck, practices book GP locums – not the other way round. We designed LocumDeck so GP locums can show availability to practices. As well as supporting GPs and practices, NASGP has now extended LocumDeck to support nurses, healthcare assistants and administrators, and will soon cover all primary care staff in the NHS. NASGP was founded in 1997 by Dr Richard Fieldhouse who recognised the challenges faced by GP locums. Richard formed a collective of GP locums in Chichester which became the very first GP locum ‘Chambers’ – a new concept in the world of general practice. Since 2020, we have offered funded regional partnerships to support ICBs to fund NASGP membership for GP locums working in local practices. GPs say we provide ‘invaluable’ assistance, that ‘all aspects of GP locum work have been made easier as a result of NASGP membership’ and that LocumDeck is ‘a must-have for any GP locum’. One member said: ‘Within a day of putting my sessions on, I was booked up for the next six weeks.’ GPs can work remotely on LocumDeck and our tech partner for remote work, GPintheCloud, has been shortlisted for an HSJ award. Other partners include the RCGP and Bluestream Academy. Our chair, Dr Fieldhouse, has represented the voice of sessional GPs on BBC radio, national newspapers, and in the trade press, including Pulse magazine and GP Online.

It's set apart by its user-friendly design for mobile and desktop, efficient booking system, and GP-designed features. The platform enables GPs to profile their experience, availability, and terms for practices to browse. On LocumDeck, practices book GP locums – not the other way round. A unique feature, Instant Book, saves GPs and practices time by allowing immediate job bookings, even for remote sessions. LocumDeck integrates with GPintheCloud, letting GP locums work from their own laptops with secure access to the practice’s clinical desktop. Constant improvements based on user feedback led to LocumDeck being added to the Digital Framework for primary care. Overall, LocumDeck’s innovative approach, smooth integration with remote tech, and commitment to user satisfaction make it the go-to choice for securing high-quality GP locums.

By our reckoning, 2023 was something of a ‘boom’ year for GP locums: by our estimates there were over 21,000 of us in January, and LocumDeck had its busiest ever day on 21 October last year. Speaking of LocumDeck’s busiest days, we know that autumn and winter are hectic months for general practice. Even if the work seems more scarce, we believe seasonal trends will hold. Add your availability on LocumDeck today for the last three months of the year. Sadly although there’s more locum work to be found in the autumn, the weather’s gloomy – and the outlook’s even gloomier after Keir Starmer announced that the autumn budget would bring ‘painful’ news to GPs’ bank balances next year. Nothing will be confirmed until 30 October, but look out for our news coverage in a couple of weeks to find out how the new budget might affect you. We’ve got just one more issue of The Sessional GP left this year so if there’s anything you’d like us to know about how LocumDeck has helped you this year, please let us know by emailing the team on info@nasgp.org.uk. GPC votes to 'phase out' physician associates from general practice. The concept of highly motivated, skilled people to support busy, overstretched GPs is a good one. As a profession, we’ve been saying for years how overstretched we all are, and it would be hard to say no to the offer of having skilled colleagues take on many of the more routine tasks of patient care that we’re overqualified to deal with. But that’s not what’s happened. Instead, many of our PA colleagues have not only been given inadequately supervised clinical roles to manage undifferentiated illness, there’s also no requisite for regulation for at least two more years. None of this is the fault of physician associates. We’re acutely aware of the current struggles that so many GPs are facing at the moment, so the GPC’s focus on doing more to get GPs back into the workforce is absolutely the right thing to do, whilst also ensuring we find appropriate roles for our PA colleagues so that patient safety is fully maintained. Thanks for watching. The General Practitioners’ Committee (GPC) at the British Medical Association (BMA) has voted to phase out existing physician associates in general practice and bar practices from hiring new PAs. The decision was made at last week’s GPC UK meeting. “We are aware that this is a challenging and politically heightened issue,” Dr Katie Bramall-Stainer, chair of the GPC, said: “At the heart of it is patient safety, which needs to be prioritised, alongside acknowledging the responsibilities of employing practices and welfare of existing employees. “It’s no secret that we desperately need more staff in general practice, but we need to be sure that staff who see patients are suitably trained and competent to see them unsupervised. Workload is inextricably linked to the recruitment and retention of the workforce, so additional roles should not generate more work for already-stretched GPs. “We’d like to see PAs being given opportunities to retrain and take up other roles in the NHS, but the bottom line is getting more GPs into the workforce. We want to be able to give patients the care and services they need, when they need them, with the most appropriate clinician for their needs. To do that, the Government must urgently invest in practice staff such as GPs and general practice nurses.” The decision follows the revelation by the GMC earlier this month that it would allow PAs to continue to practise unregistered until December 2026.
