NCW vice president Ann Davison will be representing us at the regional UN civil society review of the Beijing declaration on the status of Women next week. Gender equality is the fifth of the UN sustainable development goals set in 2015. Young British women struggle more than men to progress at work, study suggests. The survey of about 5000 young people was taken by Young Women’s Trust. They found: 🔺41% of young women said their financial situation has worsened over the last 12 months, compared with 27% of young men. 🔺55% of young women are “filled with dread” by their household finances compared with 43% of young men. 🔺40% of young women have had to cut back on or stop doing things they enjoy in the last 12 months because they can no longer afford them, compared with 28% of young men. 🔺32% of young women said their hopes for the future had worsened over the last 12 months, compared with 25% of young men. https://lnkd.in/eAEW9XUE

You may remember we shared BBC coverage of last year’s appeal to help Interpol identify 46 cold cases of murdered women. After this appeal one British woman was identified, 30 years after her death. European police are seeking to solve more of these cases as part of the second phase of a campaign aimed at finding the names of unidentified murdered women. The second phase of the Operation Identify Me campaign includes cases in the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, France, Italy and Spain. Most of the victims are thought to have been between 15 and 30 years of age. Details of each one have been published on Interpol’s website, along with photographs of possible identifying items and facial reconstructions. https://lnkd.in/e2fNsim4

Women in the Submarine Service have suffered misogyny, bullying and other unacceptable behaviours, a Royal Navy investigation has found. This behaviour was seen "amongst all ranks" but was "not pervasive" across the service, the report said, after a two-year-long investigation. Whistleblower Sophie Brook, who was a lieutenant, made claims about her treatment while serving with the Royal Navy, first prompting the review in 2022. The allegations investigated in the report were from a number of women not just Ms Brook and covered a period between 2014 and 2020. She had alleged that a culture of sexual assault, sexual harassment and misogyny was widespread within the Submarine Service. https://lnkd.in/eQaK2Qww

One in eight girls and women raped or sexually assaulted before age 18, UNICEF says. More than 370 million girls and women alive today, or one in every eight worldwide, experienced rape or sexual assault before the age of 18, the United Nations children's agency said on Wednesday. The number rises to 650 million, or one in five, when taking into account "non-contact" forms of sexual violence, such as online or verbal abuse, UNICEF reported, in what it called the first global survey of the problem. ‘Fear of missing out’ keeping girls and young women online despite sexism. Girls and young women are seeing more unwanted sexual images and suffering more cyberstalking online, but still don’t want to take a break from social media because of a fear of missing out, a survey for Girlguiding has found. “Fomo” is keeping more than half of 11- to 21-year-olds on apps such as TikTok, Snapchat and WhatsApp despite nearly one in five saying they have been stalked online and more than a third saying they are seeing sexual images they didn’t wish to see, the survey of more than 2,000 girls and young women found. https://lnkd.in/eJR3KSuC NCW has long been campaigning to protect children online and is calling on OFCOM for urgent and robust action. https://lnkd.in/gtU3-hds

In Europe, these cooperatives offer affordable and sustainable solutions for sourcing energy, allowing regular people to come together and invest in alternative energy systems that drive the green transition. It's World Mental Health Day and this year's theme, "It is Time to Prioritize Mental Health in the Workplace", is a call to action that resonates worldwide. Mental health issues, such as depression and anxiety, are pervasive in workplaces globally, impacting productivity, attendance, and overall performance. When left untreated, the staggering economic cost is estimated at US$1 trillion annually by the WHO. World Mental Health Day 2024 aims to highlight various aspects of mental health at work, from workplace conditions and stress management to the importance of social inclusion and empowerment.
