Updates

  • We are thrilled to share that, together with Aberdeen Art Gallery and Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, we are recipients of the William Syson Foundation Travel Fund! This exciting initiative is all about removing barriers and enabling more school students across Scotland to explore our country's world-class art galleries and museums. Post-pandemic, the Foundation recognised a concerning and growing trend of reductions in school visits, to art galleries, and museums in Scotland. Research has shown that the decreases in available funding and staff resources for school visits have directly impacted schools' ability to go on in-person day visits. From autumn 2024, a pilot-funded one-year programme will cover the full costs of schools’ transport which will allow young people to visit us. The Foundation’s approach has been to remove as many barriers as possible, especially for schools in deprived areas, to ensure that more young people can be inspired by, and positively engage with Scotland’s world-class galleries and museums. • A statement from the National Galleries of Scotland on our relationship with Baillie Gifford: ‘After a lot of thought and consideration, the National Galleries of Scotland plans to continue our relationship with Baillie Gifford. We understand that this is a complex issue, and there are many differing views, but we are confident that the funding we receive from Baillie Gifford meets our strong ethical standards. 'As a cultural organisation the National Galleries of Scotland offers a space for artists to share experiences and perspectives with others, encouraging discussion and understanding of the world we live in. This is one of the main ways we can positively impact society, but it needs to be funded. ‘We deliver a world-class programme of exhibitions, events, engagement and outreach which just wouldn’t be possible without support from partners like Baillie Gifford.’
