Connecting millions of people to the energy they use, while making the energy system clean, fair, and affordable.

About us

National Grid lies at the heart of a transforming energy system. Our business areas play a vital role in connecting millions of people to the energy they use, while continually seeking ways to make the energy system clean, fair, and affordable. In the UK we own and develop the high-voltage electricity transmission network in England and Wales, taking electricity from where it’s generated to where it’s needed. National Grid Electricity Distribution delivers electricity to over 20 million people across homes and businesses in the Midlands, South West England, and South Wales. In the US, we own and operate electricity and natural gas networks, serving over 20 million people across New York State and Massachusetts. National Grid Ventures operates across the UK, Europe, and the US, developing, operating, and investing in large-scale clean energy infrastructure. National Grid Partners invests in entrepreneurs at the intersection of energy and emerging tech, with capital, resources, connections, and know-how.

Chief Operating Officer, Electric, National Grid

At National Grid, we couldn’t connect our customers with the energy that powers their lives without a field force of thousands servicing our cities and towns across Massachusetts. These dedicated, highly trained individuals are first responders - deployed to restore power in dangerous conditions like winter nor’easters and summer storms. The work they do, often at night, on weekends and over holidays, keeps the lights on for our homes and businesses and helps deliver a stronger, smarter, cleaner electric network. Over the past year, more than a dozen significant weather events impacted our network, including a mid-December storm that knocked out power to almost 200,000 customers. Thanks to our field force of more than 1,400, power was back on within 48 hours to nearly every customer – a record-setting restoration effort recently recognized with an Emergency Recovery Award from the Edison Electric Institute. To all our lineworkers at National Grid and across the industry: Thank you for your service and sacrifice. As we begin hurricane season, we know the job won’t slow down. Your hard work is deeply appreciated by our company and our customers. We’re proud to have you on our team. #LineworkerAppreciationDay #ThankALineworker #UtilityHeroes #HurricaneSeasonReady

With UK Members of Parliament of all parties being sworn into the House of Commons today, collaboration between business, policymakers and regulators has never been more important for the energy transition. Transformation at the scale and pace of the new Government’s ambitions will require a genuine partnership that sees all of us working together.   With that in mind, here are four things the Government should prioritise to accelerate the pace of decarbonisation:  1. Set a clear strategy for the energy system, aligned to a long-term industrial strategy. 2. Accelerate clean energy infrastructure delivery through ambitious reforms on planning and grid connections. It was good to see the Chancellor take the first step on planning reform yesterday but more will be needed. 3. Partner with industry to build supply chain capacity and a skills pipeline. 4. Create the right governance and partnerships to drive net zero delivery, growth and jobs.   If we get this right, there will be huge opportunities for economic growth, jobs, security of supply and lower bills. At National Grid, we are already delivering the largest overhaul of the networks in generations, investing over £30bn in the UK’s energy future in the next 5 years.   I am looking forward to working with the new Secretary of State and the new UK government to continue to drive forward the UK’s energy transition.

It was inspiring to celebrate POWERful Women’s 10th anniversary last night and to hear their Chair, Katie Jackson (also one of National Grid’s senior leaders) talk about their successes and what more needs to be done to get to 40% women in middle management and leadership roles in the U.K. energy sector by 2030. I was joined by women and allies in National Grid who are helping us to play our part in hitting that target. Delivering safe, reliable energy to our customers and communities across the Northeast US is our top priority. In the face of increasing extreme weather events, maintaining grid resilience and strengthening our networks has never been more important. We’re grateful for this support from the DOE Grid Deployment Office and look forward to working with Pointerra to identify and deploy the most cost-effective grid investments for our customers.

TODAY: GDO announced a $4.6 million investment for six projects to conduct grid resilience analysis and modeling to strengthen and modernize the grid against extreme weather. 💪⚡ With funding made available through the Grid Resilience and Climate Change Impacts Analysis (GRACI) partnerships, the selected projects will use risk assessments and modeling to support recipients of Grid Resilience State and Tribal Formula Grants with rapid decision-making to prioritize investments for impactful community benefits. Thank you to everyone who joined us for our inaugural Innovation Day at Tobacco Docks in London. Innovation has been part of our history since we connected the first integrated national grid in the world and it's only growing in importance as the entire industry scales up to shape the clean energy future.    With unprecedented demand growth from the increasing electrification and decarbonisation of global economies, the energy industry has a unique opportunity to innovate to meet those needs. The scale of growth means innovations are critical to help us build smarter, faster, more efficiently, and always with the customer at the heart.   Our innovation and venture capital arm, National Grid Partners, invests in startups to find solutions to the energy transition, and we’re now collaborating across the business to use many of these solutions. We started National Grid Partners with the goal of disrupting ourselves, but innovation can’t happen in isolation – it needs to happen within other networks and across the world.    Thank you to our National Grid Partners portfolio companies, speakers, and innovators outside of the energy industry who joined us to discuss how innovation and collaboration can deliver the energy transition, how we can scale innovation across networks, and innovative approaches driving progress towards net zero.     Statnett SF Amazon Web Services (AWS) Hitachi Energy LineVision TS Conductor IQ Capital Google Elena Fjørtoft Jake Oster Maria Ines Romero Navarro Alex Houghtaling Jason Huang Kerry Baldwin Neil Osborne   #NationalGridInnovates #Innovation #EnergyTransition
