Using innovation to manage hazards and keep road users safe is at the centre of what we do. That’s why, after sifting through some 50 applications, we will be working with six small or medium enterprises who have pitched some innovative ideas to keep our roads safe… 📱 Esitu Solutions will be developing a virtual reality training course as a downloadable app for the Meta Quest headset to promote safer and more considerate driving. For those wanting to experience some of their virtual reality technology, Esitu Solutions will be on our stand for Highways UK 2024! 📞 VESOS Solutions Ltd has developed TeCall to harvest eCall data automatically sent after collisions or breakdowns. ⛐ VivaCity sensors provide data on hazardous interactions between road users (near misses), enabling safety teams to understand the causation of conflicts and collisions and enable better and more timely interventions to be planned. ⚠️ Roadside Technologies Ltd is developing an automated hazardous object detection solution using the latest in sensing technology, to improve road user safety and enable smoother journeys through temporary work zones on roads. 🛑 CrossTech has developed a stopped vehicle detection verification system. ⏱️ Valerann’s real-time road data analytics platform enables proactive management of incidents and risks on the road. Between now and November, the six finalists will deliver their ideas in trials working with National Highways and its supply chain. We can't wait to see the end results!

🌟What is the importance of leadership in the roads sector?🌟 As a sector, our shared vision is to enable better and safer journeys for our customers. To do this successfully, we need to be guided by strong leadership and meaningful collaboration across the value chain. At Roads Academy, leaders from across the sector work collaboratively to learn, develop their skills and create solutions to challenges such as biodiversity, productivity and Health & Safety. Through our engagement with sector leaders at our Value Hubs, it is apparent that leading by example and fostering positive working environments are key levers for the betterment of our sector and the positive experience of teams and customers. 👉 Darren James, CEO of Keltbray Infrastructure Services, shares : "If you are an effective leader, you will have people who follow you. If they follow you on driving critical improvements, such as productivity, that's what we want to see from the future leaders in the sector and this is why Roads Academy is very powerful." 👉 Nicole Preston MSc IEng MICE, Programme Productivity Director at Lower Thames Crossing, summarises: "As leaders, we must exhibit the positive behaviours we hope to see in others. Recognising and respecting the needs of our team members is crucial. Leading by example, I strive to understand and meet my team's unique needs, fostering a happy, motivating environment." 👉 Sven Till, Managing Director at A E Yates Ltd., expresses: “By building leadership capability in the sector, we’re creating a universal language which means we can communicate with each other more effectively. The skills that leaders learn on Roads Academy are being translated down throughout the value chain.” 🔗 Do you want to be part of the legacy we are creating? If you get it right for people with disabilities, you get it right for everybody. 🚧 We know that driving a car is the most common mode of transport for disabled adults in England, accounting for 53% of all trips made by those with disabilities. We have a role to play with the wider mobility ecosystem to make sure we get their transport right. 🎥 Hear from Karen Govier, Head of Equality, Diversity & Inclusion at Wincanton on why accessibility in transport needs to be at the heart of everything we do. 📅 This isn’t the end of the conversation. You can hear more from Digital Lab at the Highways UK exhibition event coming up on 16 - 17 October. 🔗 Watch the full Accessible Highways event below: ▶️ https://lnkd.in/esbz5d64 #NavigatingNeurodiversity #DrivingInclusivity #AccessibilityMatters

Last year we announced an exciting new initiative to plant 3 million trees across the country by 2030. The trees are being grown at Greenwood Plants Ltd, and the first batch of tress will be ready to go out in November. Now, we’re announcing that we’ve partnered with The Tree Council to help find homes for 3 million new trees it has pledged to plant by 2030. This partnership means we can work together to plant trees in locations where they will thrive and have the most benefit for biodiversity, carbon and communities. We’re donating up to 600,000 trees annually, all from Greenwood Plant’s supply of native trees from a variety of species. ▶️ https://lnkd.in/eiw9F-6J #NHCarbonWeek

This October, the lowest carbon road resurfacing scheme we've ever attempted will be carried out on the A64 in Yorkshire. It will have a carbon footprint around 70% lower than conventional resurfacing. The journey to this project has been informed by countless innovations across the highway industry, including National Highways’ low carbon asphalt trials at the University of Nottingham. Learnings from this project will be widely shared to help tackle the sector-wide challenge of decarbonisation. ▶️ https://lnkd.in/enqSNmzk #NHCarbonWeek

96.76% of our on-road team vehicles are now ultra-low or zero emission. We expect this will be 100% (excluding traffic officer vehicles) by the end of the 2024/25 financial year! This ‘light fleet’ plays a vital role in the safe operation of motorways and trunk roads, and is currently made up of: ✅ 112 pool vehicles ✅ 160 Road Inspector vehicles ✅ 82 company cars ✅ 355 Traffic Officer vehicles We’re enabling our people to manage incidents and inspect thousands of miles of motorways, and we’re lowering our emissions as we go. ▶️ https://lnkd.in/eREqDsAS #NHCarbonWeek

We’re constantly looking at new ways to minimise delays for road users and reduce costs of roadworks. 📈 In a recent two-month trial on the M6 we managed to combine these aims, with new time-saving technology resulting in: ⌛ 2,100 fewer journeys being delayed 💰 An estimated £45,000 being saved by consolidating work The time-saving technology, developed by Alchera Technologies, was one of three finalists in the competition launched to find new ways to improve people’s experiences of roadworks. Using artificial intelligence to generate accurate traffic flow predictions, the technology enabled better roadworks planning and increased the working window meaning schemes can be completed more quickly. As a result, Alchera Technologies estimates that use of the technology across all of National Highways’ roads could reduce the number of delayed journeys by 900,000 and save the public purse £18.2m.
