Senior consultants Spencer and Rachel lead on our corrosion and paint testing projects. Both have a wealth of corrosion expertise; Spencer in the maritime and offshore industries and Rachel in the aerospace industry. Rachel also conducts our corrosion failure investigations. They are supported by Sam, our Senior Engineering Technician. Corrosion testing could help you understand a failure issue or make evidence-based decisions about the optimal coating or material for your product and environment. Who we are We are a team within the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences (FEPS) at the University of Southampton. We have been providing consultancy services for customers seeking solutions in the fields of tribology, surface science and materials engineering since Oct 2015. As a Consultancy Unit within the University of Southampton, our core staff of professional engineers harness state-of-the-art test and analysis facilities. We have the agility and expertise to design each project individually to meet your requirements drawing upon internationally recognised academic experts as needed. What we do We can simulate abrasive, corrosive or erosive environments. We provide high quality material analysis, failure examinations, characterisation and applied research projects for a variety of industrial sectors including manufacturing, oil and gas, transport, sport and medical. 🎃 As Halloween comes around, we answer the question on every surface scientist's lips… what is the wear resistance of a pumpkin? To find out, we tested samples from four different types on our TE66 micro-scale abrasion testing rig. Which was the most wear resistant? Watch the video to see the testing process and the results… Here’s the technical bit: - Weight used: 240 g - Revolutions: 1,200 rev completed - Ball speed: 90 rpm - Ball diameter: 25 mm - Slurry: 4 um diameter particles in water (0.75 g/cm3) A big thank you to third-year PhD student Lijia Yi who ran the tests, and to our Director Nicola who made sure nothing went to waste by barbecuing the leftovers (the acorn squash won the taste test).
