This manifesto is a collective industry partnership commitment and call to action to ensure our region has everything that’s required to be at the forefront of delivering industrial decarbonisation. Following our work on the North West Cluster Plan, we are working in partnership with industry, regional and national government, to move towards a coordinated delivery of the plan. The NZNW Manifesto outlines a collaborative commitment from industry to achieve net zero and propel the North West to the forefront of clean growth. Focusing on key areas like Energy Generation, Grid Infrastructure, Planning Policy, Skills and more, the document calls for government and industry support. Read the manifesto, below. ⬇️

We are thrilled to see HyNet North West secure a large share of a £22bn investment by the Government to continue the development of their hydrogen production and distribution network across the North West of England. Once operational, the deployment of Carbon Capture and Storage and Low Carbon Hydrogen at a large scale will enable us to decarbonise industries such as cement production, hydrogen production, and waste processing right here in the North West. By capturing emissions and storing them in depleted gas reservoirs in Liverpool Bay, we are taking a significant step towards a low carbon future. In the next phase of the project, HyNet will build out the infrastructure required to transport hydrogen to industrial and power generation users across the region and store hydrogen at scale in underground salt caverns in Cheshire. This will not only contribute to the UK's energy security but also provide low carbon dispatchable power when renewable energy sources are unavailable. By taking this opportunity, the North West region will solidify the country's global lead in CCS and low carbon hydrogen, develop and export skills, expand its supply chain in these sectors and generate comprehensive inward investment and socio-economic benefits. We are excited to be a part of this groundbreaking project and look forward to the positive impact it will have on the region and the UK as a whole.

Our plan to establish the UK's first full-scale carbon capture plant for energy-from-waste took a major step forward this week. Cheshire West and Chester Council’s planning committee unanimously resolved to grant approval to our Protos carbon capture project. This pioneering project is expected to capture circa 380,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide from our Protos Energy Recovery Facility, which is currently under construction near Ellesmere Port. That level of carbon reduction is equivalent to taking an estimated 200,000 cars off the road. The project aims to create a technical and commercial blueprint for similar facilities around the country to follow in future. Planning officials said: "The reduction of carbon emissions and energy generation is supported at national level, within legislation, guidance and policy. The proposed development would be one of the first such developments in the UK. As such, the proposal would positively contribute to meeting climate change initiatives and support economic growth.” Welcoming the decision, Encyclis CEO Owen Michaelson said: "We’re delighted by the council’s decision, which represents another significant step forward on our important journey to deliver carbon capture at commercial scale. This project will contribute to regeneration and jobs in the North West, stimulate green growth throughout the supply chain and unlock opportunities to be a global leader in carbon capture. Our goal is to prove that we can continue to deliver a vital public sanitation service while cutting the CO2 emissions that contribute to climate change. We thank the local authority for its careful and efficient consideration of our application and recognising the strategic importance of this project.” The project has already been selected by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero as part of its Track-1 cluster sequencing programme for industrial carbon capture. It will enable fully sustainable treatment of unrecyclable residual household and commercial waste at Protos ERF, which is being constructed by Encyclis and joint owners Biffa. When it begins operations, Protos ERF will process up to 500,000 tonnes per year of residual waste, generating enough baseload electricity to power around 75,000 homes and recovering reusable resources in support of the circular economy. The proposed carbon capture plant, on adjoining land, will capture CO2 from the facility which, as part of the region’s HyNet decarbonisation cluster, will be transported by pipeline for offshore storage in the depleted gas fields of Liverpool Bay. The construction of the plant will support around 250 jobs in the North West region, and an additional seven full-time skilled jobs will be created when it begins operations. We extend our thanks to all of those involved in working towards this important milestone. #carboncapture #protos #energyfromwaste

We are excited to see the official launch of National Energy System Operator (NESO), the UK's new nationalised energy grid operator. As of today, the Electricity System Operator (ESO), has been taken into public ownership to create a new National Energy System Operator (NESO) which has been tasked to oversea Britain's energy gird and lead the transition to a clean energy landscape by 2030. As well as ensuring the smooth operation of our gas and electricity systems, NESO's aims are to adopt a more strategic and integrated approach to achieve a quicker and more responsible transition a net zero energy mix by 2030 - an ambitious goal set by the new Labour Government While the introduction of NESO is a welcome change, Net Zero North West will continue to urge the government to take big strides towards making the UK Net Zero by 2050, increasing powers for local government and organisations to support their local industries to decarbonise quickly and sustainably. #netzero #energy #nationalgrid

At NESO, we're at the heart of the energy transition, orchestrating the whole energy transition to create a world where everyone has access to reliable, clean and affordable energy. Find out more: https://bit.ly/3Y3hkZm
