Interesting report from Robert Hodgson at Euronews on the agreement of the #EU’s negotiating stance ahead of #COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan next month. Whilst the EU will push to stay “within reach” the objective of limiting global heating to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, environmental groups and campaigners have made the case that these ambitions lack integrity, with no clear deadlines or legible plans. Climate Action Network (CAN) Europe director Chiara Martinelli comments: “The EU’s next Nationally Determined Contribution (#NDC) must include clear phase-out dates: Coal by 2030, gas by 2035, and oil by 2040 at the latest and a clear signal in this direction is necessary in Baku.” Article here: https://lnkd.in/eMFUM-VJ Graph below shows a map of national coal phase out pledges, from our 'In the Pipeline' analysis published at #COP28 last year: https://lnkd.in/emxpRG4f

A robust set of governance features undergirded by a binding legal framework are two components that are essential to facilitate a successful net zero transition. As shown by the UK’s Climate Change Act, both features are needed to enable the coordination of national-level climate action. Take a look at Net Zero Tracker’s project lead John Lang’s latest infographic which unpacks the eight essential features of a strong national-level climate law. Interesting reporting from Sarah Wray, Global Government Forum on our latest #NetZeroStocktake. Citing our latest analysis showing that the number of cities and regions with net zero targets has increased by 8% and 28% respectively since the previous stocktake in June 2023, the piece features comments from Dr Steve Smith, executive director at Oxford Net Zero: “It’s two years since the UN secretary general launched a report into net zero pledges, saying ‘we must have zero tolerance for net-zero greenwashing’.” This piece notes our findings that national-level targets may serve as a ‘ceiling’ of ambition for sub-national climate action, with some entities overtaking and influencing the ambition of national target setting- effectively creating an ‘ambition loop’. Gregor Robertson, special envoy for cities in the Coalition for High Ambition Multilevel Partnerships (CHAMP) and former mayor of Vancouver commented earlier this year: “Country leaders must recognise that the battle against climate change will be won or lost in our cities. Urban areas are where the impacts are most felt and where innovative solutions are often first developed. It is imperative that national leaders embrace cities as critical partners, not just as stakeholders.” Read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/e82ektcd https://lnkd.in/ep_X9SD5

A commitment gap is holding back the necessary economy-wide transition as the climate crisis intensifies. According to the newly released Net Zero Stocktake 2024, an annual assessment by our partners at Net Zero Tracker, as net zero regulations and litigation increase, hedging becomes less viable—it’s time for governments and companies to deliver. Key findings include: 🟢The number of companies, cities, states & regions with net zero targets increased, up 23%, 8% and 28%, respectively, since the 2023 report. 🟢Despite the growing number of net zero targets, only 5% or fewer of entities across states, regions, cities, and companies meet the minimum procedural and substantive integrity criteria. 🟢More than 40% of non-state entities still lack emission reduction or net zero equivalent targets. Learn more about these insights in the overview by John Lang, Project Lead at Net Zero. #ClimateAction #NetZero #Sustainability #NetZeroTracker #GlobalTransition #SustainabilityUnlocked #SubnationalLeadership
