New Hospital Programme
Hospitals and Health Care
The biggest NHS hospital building programme in a generation, delivering world-class care and services for our patients.
About us
The New Hospital Programme is the biggest hospital building programme in a generation. It is a dramatic shift in the way we deliver major healthcare projects in England, building hospitals that will transform the health sector and set new standards for the way we build future social infrastructure. We will create world-class health facilities through innovation and collaboration, empowering clinical professionals to deliver the best possible care for patients. We are replacing outdated infrastructure with modern, innovative, and environmentally sustainable buildings to provide top-class healthcare services and facilities for patients, staff and local communities. Digital technology will change the way healthcare is delivered in these facilities. Smart technology will reduce basic and repetitive tasks and free up time for patient care. Our mission is to help NHS Trusts to provide high-quality, sustainable care for patients, deliver intelligent hospitals, develop national capability, and build better, build faster and build a sustainable legacy. Rather than treating each project as a standalone scheme, we will capture opportunities to standardise design and leverage scale to maximise effectiveness and efficiency. The New Hospital Programme is transformational and will set new standards for the commissioning of future social infrastructure.

Last week, Sarah Thomas, Digital Director and Emma Whigham, Market and Supply Chain Director spoke at #rewired, sharing their expertise on Digital Transformation and collaborative working with key stakeholders. Sarah spoke alongside Nicky Murphy, Regional Director of Digital Transformation, East of England (NHS England), and Chris Booth, Digital Lead, Future Paget Programme, James Paget University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, and discussed the benefit of patients having access to their data and the role that this information can play in supporting staff to best care for patients. Emma Whigham spoke as part of a mixed panel with Declan Hadley, (Cisco ThousandEyes), Mark Davies, (IBM), and Ng Yih Yng, (NHG Singapore), about the benefits of standardisation in new hospitals to drive commonality, whilst ensuring a level of flexibility so that care can be tailored to the needs of the patient. Emma also touched on NHP’s commitment to delivery at pace, with the launch of the Hospital 2.0 Alliance Procurement Network and the introduction of the Programme Delivery Partner. #buildingthefuture #newhospitals #smartbuildings #digitaltransformation

International Women’s Day (IWD) – what does it mean to you? Katie Gosling, NHP Delivery Improvement Director, Programme Delivery "My career has always been within the built environment, the property and construction industry, where, unfortunately, there remains an imbalance in gender. International Women's Day is not just about reflection; it's a call to action. So much progress has been made, but there's still so much more to be done. Gender equality isn’t just a 'nice-to-have'; it’s a necessity for creating a more innovative, inclusive, and effective workplace. When women are empowered to reach their full potential, organisations will benefit from a wider range of perspectives and solutions, driving better outcomes. Across the construction industry we continue to see issues with shortages of workforce, so I’m passionate about encouraging and supporting women to pursue a career within it. We must continue to accelerate efforts toward equality – through actions that reshape our workplaces and society. Creating environments that women want to join, where they feel they can thrive, and, ultimately, where they want to stay.” #IWD2025 #AccelerateAction #NHP #TeamNHP #EqualityBenefitsEveryone

International Women’s Day (IWD) – what does it mean to you? Charlotte Taylor CBE, NHP Director for Programme Strategy, Funding, Policy and Schemes “It’s important to mark this day, but not as a tick box exercise. It’s easy enough to add a banner or craft a post on social media, but unless we do the difficult work, things won’t change. At the current rate of progress, the pay gap between men and women in the UK won't be fully eliminated until 2065, and true parity for women as a sex class won't be achieved until 2158, approximately five generations from now. There are significant sex-based differences in how women are treated in every aspect of life. Male violence against women is a huge problem and the bravery of Gisele Pelicot in France highlighted that while it is not all men, it is every type of man. We still worry, as much as our parents did, about our daughters walking home after dark and that women’s rights are being eroded worldwide. So, while I celebrate IWD, we must all do more to ensure women’s voices are heard 365 days of the year – not just today.” #IWD2025 #AccelerateAction #NHP #TeamNHP #EqualityBenefitsEveryone

International Women’s Day (IWD) – what does it mean to you? Kitty Dimbleby, NHP Head of Communications and Engagement “Over the course of my career writing about women’s lives and issues has always been a priority. In 2008 I went to Afghanistan reporting for a national newspaper. There I visited female-owned businesses, women-led village councils, women’s health clinics and a girls’ only school. It was a privilege to tell these women’s stories and it’s devastating to know that the happy girls in this photo, have lost the basic human rights to education, freedom to work and healthcare, they were afforded 17 years ago. We must never forget how quickly things can go backwards, wherever you are in the world – just look at Rode vs. Wade in America. Now working for the NHS, I feel just as passionate about championing women. One simple action which I value (and benefits both sexes) is to offer true flexible working. This means that parents or carers can be there for their children, or other dependent, without it impacting their professional progression.” #IWD2025 #AccelerateAction #NHP #TeamNHP #EqualityBenefitsEveryone

International Women’s Day (IWD) – what does it mean to you? Karen Bradley, NHP Analytics, Demand and Capacity Model Deployment “This quote represents to me the meaning of International Women’s Day. IWD is about women leading a social justice approach to work and life. In all aspects of my life, I try to remove barriers meaning everyone benefits.” #IWD2025 #AccelerateAction #NHP #TeamNHP #EqualityBenefitsEveryone

International Women’s Day (IWD) – what does it mean to you? Darren Crook CBE, NHP Programme Delivery Director “Throughout my career I have consistently worked with the most brilliant women, in STEM, Programme Delivery, Defence, Sports and Health. I've seen and heard how those women have had to overcome obstacles that I didn't face - this has inspired me to #AccelerateAction and create a diverse and inclusive environment in which we can all flourish together. I serve to lead, in thought and deed, and that means by example. I am committed to a working environment that supports well-being, balance and purpose. This has included using reverse mentoring to become more aware of women’s health and the security that I take for granted when walking alone. I hugely value the opportunity to work with and for women and be their champion.” #IWD2025 #AccelerateAction #NHP #TeamNHP #EqualityBenefitsEveryone

International Women’s Day (IWD) – what does it mean to you? Natalie Forrest, Senior Responsible Owner, NHP “I grew up, like many children, being taught life skills by my parents. One day I might learn how to make pastry and the next how to change the fuse in a plug. The result? I believed I could do anything I put my mind to – there were no ‘pink’ or ‘blue’ jobs. I don’t know when, but there came a point when I realised that not everybody thought the same. So, I tried harder and fought more to show I could do anything and everything I chose to. Until true gender parity is achieved, and we don’t have to fight harder than our male counterparts to prove ourselves, it’s critical to support one other and find places where our value is considered equal. As a leader it’s one of the very best parts of the job…. showing other women that there is nothing they can’t do. For me International Woman’s Day is about celebrating that.” #IWD2025 #AccelerateAction #NHP #TeamNHP #EqualityBenefitsEveryone

International Women’s Day (IWD) – what does it mean to you? Natasha Rudat, NHP Deputy Director of Communications and Engagement “I’ve been lucky to work on major infrastructure projects that really led in creating inclusive environments that supported greater equality. There really is something in the phrase ‘you can’t be what you can’t see’. Throughout my career I have benefited from people who supported my development and encouraged me to take the next step in my career. It took me a while to get comfortable that I didn’t need to change my style to fit in with what I thought good leadership was. Many of us will have doubts about whether we can do something, so to help #AccelerateAction, no matter what progress has been made there is always still much to do and it’s on all of us to play our part – it’s not just about the workplace it’s our behaviours and actions outside of work too. ” #IWD2025 #AccelerateAction #NHP #TeamNHP #EqualityBenefitsEveryone
