New Pathways is a registered charity that provides a range of specialist services for those affected by sexual abuse.
About us
New Pathways is a registered charitable company that provides a range of specialist counselling and advocacy services for women, men, children and young people who have been affected by rape or sexual abuse. We have many years of experience and are widely regarded throughout the UK as a leading organisation in our field. Our clients come from every walk of life and are of all ages. To date our youngest client has been three years of age and our oldest has been in their nineties. New Pathways was established in Merthyr Tydfil in 1993 as a helpline for female victims of rape. At the time it was operational for only a few hours each week and it was run entirely by volunteers. Over the years New Pathways has grown and diversified and we now offer a range of counselling, advocacy and support services for women, men, children and young people. We work in partnership with numerous statutory and voluntary agencies and we are now widely regarded throughout the UK as a leading organisation in our field. We have offices throughout the southern half of Wales and we employ more than 50 staff and have more than 70 volunteers. Each year our various projects receive more than 2000 referrals from people of all ages who have been affected by rape and sexual abuse. In 2009 our former Manager Libby Jones was awarded the MBE on behalf of New Pathways for outstanding services to victims of rape and sexual abuse in Wales. We are very proud of the fact that New Pathways has always listened carefully to its clients and used their feedback to develop new services and new ideas. We will continue to strive to improve and to deliver excellent services for people who have been affected by rape and sexual abuse.

Halloween can be a really fun night, but for survivors of trauma who have to contend with scary experiences, it can also be quite difficult. Gory or graphic costumes, jump scares and even knocking at the door can cause significant anxiety to survivors, so please be mindful about how you spend your night and check in on those friends who may be struggling. If you're feeling anxious, please feel free to use one of our self resources to ground yourself, manage flashbacks and understand what's happening: https://buff.ly/47tRdfz

It takes a lot of courage for survivors to discuss their experiences, and we have a lot of admiration for this survivor's account of accessing a Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC). We run several SARCs across South and Mid Wales ready to support survivors of sexual violence. To learn more about our SARCS including how they can help, what they do and where you can access them, visit https://buff.ly/40nYFsB [BBC Sounds: Woman's Hour - Sexual Assault Referral Centres https://buff.ly/40q5gTo at 30:00]

In a week where new legislation for employers should make everyone safer from sexual harassment at work, sadly we find that the same old victim-blaming myths about sexual assault are still alive and well. Unless we all recognise these, and consistently challenge them, wherever we find them, we can never truly have a society that empowers victims to seek support or redress for their devastating experiences.
